submitted A heros welcome for saving a life to Elmer and Carol By MIKE TURNER Herald Staff A Georgetown area couple who are credited with saving the life of a Toronto woman last summer were recognized for their act of bravery at a reception in Toronto Friday Elmer and Carol of Georgetown were presented with a plaque at the Lemon Hart Safe Boating Awards Program ceremony at the Sheraton Centre The were enjoying a sail vacation aboard their 36t boat last summer on Georgian Bay On the morning of July the were anchored In the Honey Harbor area near Midland Shortly before Sam they were awakened by cries for help end went above to see a power boat an chored a quarter mile away engulf In flames Elmer and Carol Mr Immediately took their dinghy and rowed across to the burning boat while his wife called In a Mayday to the Coast Guard As he approached the boat Mr Engiert found a woman later iden tified as Mrs John King clinging to the side of the vessel Meanwhile a nearby cottager also aroused by the cries for help had arrived on the scene and had thrown a line to the woman However her burns were so severe she was unable to hold on Mr Engiert entered the water and swam to the victim but was faced with the problem of getting her into the boat I t know bo to touch her or how we were going to get ber out of the water he said By submerging the dinghy Mr Engiert was able to float the woman over and gently place her in the craft After balling out the dinghy he rowed to another cottage where the residents were awakened and an ambulance was called Mrs King was taken to Midland hospital and then flown to Toronto Thanks to the resourcefulness of her rescuers she was being treated at the bum unit of Wellesley Hospital by 30am The Coast Guard located the burn ing boat which had gone adrift
