Teacher makes great volunteer By KAREN SLOAN Herald Special Childrens Aid Society volunteer Susan McCormack has found her work at the Agency to be a great learning experience in her per life over the past five years After resigning from her position as a teacher In 1681 to have a baby Susan realized she needed something to do outside of the house She did not wish to return to a full time job immediately so she turned to the CAS Volunteer Department Susan worked with the young mothers group in Milton and was able to take her son to the weekly meetings at which parenting skills ore taught Susan also participated in a STEP training course which proved helpful In raising her own son I ve learned a lot from CAS she says recently moved on to the Teen Mothers group where she a coleader She sees a great need for teen mothers to gain selfconfidence That the biggest problem she says Susan and other workers try to get the mothers to realize that they need help Presently Susan working as a Children Involved with the Socie ty need to be transported to medical appointments play therapy family visits counselling sessions and sup port groups Transportation is re quired daytime and evenings coming each week faithfully they begin to open up Ruth has also been involved in the Society Volunteer and Resource Committee assisting with public relations work In the community She has worked as a volunteer and with the committee dealing with the Volunteer Incentive Fund for children who are clients of the Socie ty but not receiving financial help Hie money from the Volunteer In Fund goes towards bikes for paper routes gymnastics dancing or music lessons and many extra activities that the families cannot ford The committee also brings recom to the Board of tors on volunteer related
