YOU CALL BETH JANKT Member of HAND Action for Nuclear One of the more delightfully off beat groups to arise out of the peace movement is Victoria s Raging Grannies Ranging in age from to they dress in dish costumes and serenade mall shoppers threat regoers and clans with songs about the arms One song to the tune of Clemen tine expressed concern for the presence of US Trident submarines in Canadian waters On our waters in our harbour US ships do come and go Many of them carry warheads But you re not supposed lo know Peace Beat Theres a problem in Esquimau That could make us go Kerb am Other hits include It a Long Way to Vladivostok and Rudolph the Radiated Reindeer about the widespread effects of radiation from nuclear explosions such as Cher A recent focus Is the planned purchase of nuclear powered sub marines for Arctic waters at a of 10 to 15 billion dollars The Gran wonder why we need them Perhaps the Grannies most am bilious performance was last sum when three of Ihem paddled a canoe out to a nuclear submarine In Harbour to sing to the sailors on board A fourth Granny rowed out with a camera operator who captured the whole event on videotape tor the local TV station Like most peace groups the Gran try to think globally but act locally Their particular concern is the chance of a nuclear weapons while foreign ships are in hour and they feel that by allowing such ships to visit Victoria Harbour that Canada is supporting the naval nuclear arms race Most of the Grannies songs are set to familiar old and the audience Is invited to sing along Musical is not a prere We are a far cry from pro fessional says Fran Thohurn One or two arc atonal actually and this gives our songs a lovely homespun effect The Grannies believe that sometimes one can best make people think and respond by making them laugh A lot of people arc nuclear phobic says Granny Linda Golden Siegel can read about nuclear issues Its too horrible But because we ore dress up and positive and its done with levity theylikcus The Raging Grannies arc spreading Groups have now formed in other communities and Ed m onion as well Raging Grandads and Raging would be welcome diversifications for the group is Hal ton Hills ready for a group of Raging May we hope to sec local seniors dressed in fancy hats pink running shoes and garish clothing performing on Main Street Stay tuned By Hughes Sales Rep 8730300 I was highly amused to read that our population was up by Just over people this year What an increase really boggles the mind for I don know where we have most of them Sure there has been some very isolated building in the past year but not enough to house that many people How are our business surviving with this kind of growth Surely many must be starving or barely hanging in there It is very difficult to attract growth in industrj when there is not a growth in population help it along Another one of our stores has closed recently and one that I thought was doing quite well but alas there is the traditional paper on the windows and the lighted sign is down Too many people on a diet I guess to support this business any longer More recently you have probably noticed that we are getting a new area of building off Wlldwood Road Cheers However this is not going to help too many people on the lower end of the scale that arc trying to buy tor this development is a one and not or the budget mind to be sure It is development however and for that I have to be pleased for it will encourage some movement mlown and perhaps we can place a few more families within the next year In our profession in this town we Icam to be grateful for small mercies Now if we can Just get that development going down the line things will improve drastically for the average buyer for prices ore still on the increase and a shortage of homes is the cry from us in the Georgetown market Most of list of people willing lo buy In the lower pncc bracket and even the middle bracket which ls now around the mark by the way and it is extremely difficult to place them Certainly there is no choice to speak of and who wants to buy a home List it is the only one available in that price range terrible situation to be in for a pur chaser and unfortunately that is what we are facing at present Maybe next year our population will be staggering if the bulldozers get going Kcepsaving you re going to need it THIS WEEKS MORTGAGE RATES Binkol Nova Scotia 10 it 0 Montreal 10 10V 1 11V Trull 10V 10W 11 CISC 10V Bsnk IOVi 10 1DV 10V 10 11 11V Bind ia IOVi
