the family Eric keep running a family affair and and his grandfather Jack Butler won awards for being the oldest and represented the young and the old of youngest racers in the event It at last Sunday annual Mayor s Herald photo Race The Jogging duo are helping to Keep an Ace up your sleeve run well in Haltom If Ihe Ace could have been there be would have shrugged smiled and said Well let eml I had just arrived in Bobcaygeon for our fifth annual Hills Am bulance Crew fishing trip and I was late very late The cottage we had rented for the weekend was quiet now and vacated for the moment but the telling turmoil indicated that the boys had indeed arrived safely and they seemed to be having a good time Actually the Ace probably would have commented A little messy but what do you expect when you don have your wives along to clean up after you Alas the Ace had another commitment this weekend and couldn t make our trip so I stood alone surveying ihe silent domicile The first thing I checked was the refrigerator to peruse the boys catch Hmmm empty The fish are probably still on stringers out at the dock I thought A quick Jog down to the waterfront however revealed no boats no stringers no fish The ambulance boys were all out on lake still trying to catch supper As I made a few casts from Ihe dock I could imagine the Ace saying Relax here hove a cool one The fish will come One by one our fishing boats returned to our waterfront and each fellow followed his initial cheery welcome with a downcast that told me the fishing was slow Slow Its one said shaking his head Nothing muttered Not a dam thing Relax the Ace would have said to all of us at this point The fish will come You re trying loo hard Relax have a good time Yes we really could have used the Ace s encouragement just then You can t say that we dido t try We fished for wenty of the next twenty four hours taking short meal breaks and continuing our ef forts throughout the night We t blame the weather You remember the Victoria Day holiday weekend you The weatherman was just like Gaylord Perry the ol pitcher you didnt know what he was going to throw your way but you had a good Idea that it would be wet Cloudy light showers fog patches winds from the west Perfect Great weather for walleye fishing And you t blame the Bobcaygeon is one of the prime walleye yellow pickerel domains In this part of Ontario The Bob River and the canal join Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes and these waters lures we liied drifting anchoring trolling all to no avail except for a few and a single keeper congratulations And now as the weekend was win ding down boys resorted to jokes and card games Euchre No thanks I m not very good at Funny game when a jack can beat on ace That when I remembered The next day would be different I would copy the Ace So the next morning I slept in well past sunrise By this time Ihe ambulance boys had all departed getting a head start on the holiday traffic Graham and Bob were the last tosay goodbye I look my lime washing up and shaving and whistled off tune just like the Ace would have done I en joyed a full breakfast cleaned up put on my new fishing cap dlscar ding lucky and grabbed a single fishing pole a few hooks and sinkers and a container of worms I left the gimmicky things behind Juice WhaLs that Some kind of orange drink the Ace would have asked Forget tl leave And that net tool One surefire way to get a fish to bite Is to go out without your net Besides Its been on holiday all weekend Leave ihe net Now relax lake your time That what I imag the Ace might have said had he been there I ambled down to the boat and studied the now much quieter water Gone were the huge power boats and pontoon craft I tried to imagine where the Ace might fish first and then it became obvious we had fish ed for miles all around the lake and river but we had neglected what would have been the Ace choice spot 1 look the boat a mere fifty feet off our dock and started a drift let ting my line sink slowly in the cur rent Well you all know bow good ft felt when I detected a gentle tap tap nibble on worm at the end of my line tap lap Just a couple of seconds more take it picky a firmhooksct and Fish on With some difficulty and a lot of luck I landed the nice walleye no net remember and I thought The Aces tricks worked again Honest Injun that how It happen And you know for us to exist we all have an Ace I happen to think that mine s In first Yours may not be here in this time or space But think hard and you 11 see his kind smiling face And this Sunday pay tribute in your special way Remember your Dad on Fathers Day your grandson Lennon and I I ke to take you fishing for a couple of hours And we promise to relax and have a good time fish or no fish SHORELINES The
