SECTION IE HERALD Wednesday Angus Entertainment Chalk up another Die Hard fan TV takes on that wholesome look AT THE MOVIES I These days when a child wanders Into the room where parents are watching TV some turn the TV off of the program con tent consider an alternative is the president of Family Channel a payTV service being launched Sept She feels there Is a market In Canada for family enter tainment where the only surprises viewers get are pleasant In a Toronto telephone interview Rubes stressed the Family Channel wants to provide entertainment people can laugh at or cry with but is not going to off end This la not going to be a Yuppie Entertainment Bob Sautes families and senior Li tens Lots of people over simply do not want to turn their TV on now she sold A lot of programs start out okay Ihen there is violence or sex Tbey want to have fun hey dont want to see the hard stuff Sixty per cent of the Family Chan nels programs come from the Disney Channel In the US movies cartoons etc Another per cent are Canadian The Family Channel about per month less part of a payTV package will concentrate on movies which make up about per cent of its Bridges a threetime Oscar nominee li THE Bridges For the first time father and Mo are appearing In the same movie Tucker The Man and hut Dream Jeff is the star while Lloyd la one of a number of supporting actors to the Ex By DIAHANN Herald Special Hissing Moonlighting Wondering how Bruce Willis Is wearing Ms hair nowadays Dying to hear two people argue at once Then Die Hard Is for you And surprisingly for those of us who have a low tolerance for the mouthy Mr Willis Die Hard is still fun Araaxing dont you think Willis John McLane a New York cop who has come to LA to be with family lor Christmas His wife Holly Bonnie works for a large corporation celebrating Christmas with a party in their new and unfinished skyscraper John ar rives and he and Holly start arguing together and at the same time that point A band of rorlstsrobbcrs enters the building and seals off the partygoers keep ing 30 people hostage McLane manages to escape without being seen and starts the game of knock ing off the villains one by one using their weapons and radio to his ad vantage The terrorists are a group of 12 or more men who are very well train ed precise and utterly ruthless Most of them are GErman In cluding the leader Hans Alan Rickman They have taken over the building to rob the vault of million In securities They spent a couple of on weapons their arms are so sophisticated that the LAPD and the FBI are hopelessly outgunned Naturally It is left to John to defeat these Eurothugs and release equipped with a handgun can outsmart and outrun a dozen Euro peans We know the score The movie is good because It is basically tongueincheek theres a lot of humor and quite a few laughs McLane may be taking on the bad guvs alone but we know that its a ridiculous plot and only In the movies could this sort of thing hap In fact McLane refers to as Roy after his hero Roy Rogers Another heavyhanded satire In volves the authorities local and federal The deputy chief is too stupid to be believed and the FBI are all Idiots named Johnson The media Is depicted as even dumber than the police putting them on par with my Airedale For tunately the terrorists are a little smarter though not smart enough of course Im sure John was writ ten with Willis In mind The role seems tailormade for nun And he does It well managing to keep his Ir ritating mannerisms down to a minimum Bonnie Bedella is his wife Hotly Gennero I milted after a few seconds that I disliked her voice and wasnt too keen on her face Con sidering how I viewed the two stars Its astonishing that Hiked the film I thought the terrorists were great however Alan was wonderfully cool and collected as the leading terrorist At one point it looked like McLane had him and 1 was actually afraid he would be kill ed Hickmans sidekick is Alexander Goudenov ballet star turned marksman With thieves like this who needs good guys This Is an enjoyable film violent at times but mostly lust fun The ac tion to good and the direction Is tight and Willis isnt too aggravating What more can we ask for GO Transit and the Canadian Na tional Exhibition are teaming up again this year to offer discounted adult admission to the Ex With weekend and Labor Day
