Globe tunes up for the new season Dollys looking for a few good men A shortage of men has reached Global proportions No this Isnt the premise or some outlandish science fiction movie Its merely the state of affairs for Georgetown Globe Productions as they prepare for their first major project of the new theatre season the staging of Hello Dolly The group is ready to begin rehearsals this Tuesday but they would like to fill a serious void as soon as possible While many of the principle roles have been filled wo men are urgently needed to play principle male roles and more men are needed to fill the male chorus The shortfall of men is something Globe wrestles with on an ongoing basis For men priorities are con tinually shifting and often they can not commit to projects each new season says McNeil a member of Globe Productions Shower singers will do says Ms McNeil Often people who dont think they can sing do fine They Just have to have a genuine In terest in music and want to have some tun And the emphasis is definitely on People hove come from Bramp ton and Misslssauga to join us because were a fun group says Debbie Tilson another member of Globe But while having a good time DIAHANN Herald Special If you dont drink dont see this movie And If you do drink do not at tempt those tricks at home youll waste a lot of liquor 1 had no idea tending bar could be such a creative Job you wont believe the things you can do with a bottle of whiskey Foolish mo I I Just drank the dam stuff Cocktail is a neat film but its ma jor flaw is that there Is no plot or story line to speak of Boy become bartender thats it Things happen but they re not earthshaking events by any means Tom Cruise plays Brian Flanagan a guy without a college degree who wants make It big on Wall Street Naturally he gets nowhere In the business community and ends up taking a Job as a bartender His col league and teacher is Doug Bryan Brown and Doug is a star bartender Brian soon picks up his flashy style and is a willing listener to Doug observations And thats basically the movie The men move from one bar to another they have a fight they make up they make mistakes They tease and torment one another and the remarks are witty and quick the centre of the film this friendship and the dialogue It is I in AT THE MOVIES mini I definitely a character study and the film works because Flanagan and Cogan are Interesting people Cogan especially is a fascinating per cynical selfdeprecating but vulnerable Cruise Is really good as the naive the fast track Is hard and He never quite makes the yup pie dream but thats Bryan Brown is magnetic as Cogan Hes far more fascinating than Cruise and I thought Brown was the best thing about this movie Hes so perfectly cynical and witty and sexy I think that Cruise Is Just loo young to be attractive although I may be alone in that opinion so I was glad Brown was there to provide a mature appeal Elizabeth Adventures In Babysitting is fine as Flanagans girlfriend and she certainly Is easy Donaldson No Way Out directed Cocktail and I dont think he could have found a more con trasting script Cocktail doesnt pro vide any suspense or tension it Visitors
