TI1PI1FRAID Second spot in COBA Eagles land with silver The last day of August was the final day of the Georgetown Juvenile baseball season The season had started for most players Jan 10 In the high school gymnasium and after nearly eight months of practising and almost 33 Ihe season ended with a to the Bloor Blue Jays This result meant that the Bloor team won the gold medal and the local squad won the silver with a second puce finish In the Central Ontario Baseball Association playoffs The season marked the se cond straight year that the Juveniles ended their season with a winning record Their league play in 1968 resulted In 11 wins six losses and one tie This represented quite an for this team as most centres In their league Invite layers for try outs whereas Georgetown had IB players on Jan 10 and they had to keep all 18 because of school and work schedules These young men learned to play tight baseball with good pit and a strong defence The Eagles won many of their games Junior Under 18 squad a marvelous weekend They came up trumps against Erin Mills on Saturday in the Peel Hal Ion semi finals with a resounding victory Martin Barnard scored two alter nonstop running upset the Milts defence Billy Murphy netted as also did young Coleman The tads did not play too well yet did enough to gain the victory One day later they took the field with the favorites Chlnguacousy In the final The first half was tremendous with Town midfield with the Ching players kept on a tight reign Glynn and Billy Murphy prodded from with Barnard again Ing strongly and creating havoc Good defensive work from Ching the score sheet clean at the the Town a few times to keep the score down Only Barnard up front carried Ihe banner as Ching stole away to net the second and sure win for championship The boys played well and gave their all par those mentioned and Trent Cull who Is only 14 years of age a great prospect I have been away for a few weeks tod I have to say that here we are In the summer season and we are full of hockey news a winter sport and with less numbers than soccer such news Is not fully Justified in my Earlier year we had a hockey team pull off the Ontario and North American championships and we hardly saw anything in print and this was a tremendous achieve ment Sometimes I think our newspaper folks have matters out of proper perspective However I only write a column I am not the editorial or publishing staff By the time you rend this lot United will have completed their preparations Tor the Ontario Cup finals in and all we can do here is wish the team well It is many a long year since Town had soccer serve us so well in the challenge of provincial competition and I for one feel good and will be there to cheer the tods on to victory Victory which will see them repre- sent Ontario in the National Cham am also pleased to report that I shall be attending the National Championships In Vancouver In Oc as representative of Ontario Soccer whilst travelling with the r Under victors whoever they may I be Hopefully United will also be and girls tor the first time in many years I will not be there as I shall be In Oshawa This is the culmination of the season far many coaches and certainly the players 1 trust you will all have a good day All Ihe age groups take part and it should be a busy day all round Inter County season up to eligible to play Juvenile ball and since the majority of these 19y earolds have left Georgetown to attend university and college It came as a surprise to learn after the last game that the majority of these players plan to return to Georgetown In 1989 to enable Georgetown Baseball Association to field a Junior entry In Boyd and Andy Williams have agreed to coach this team and they will be looking for ad dltional players to replace a few who will not be returning to Georgetown In spring The Eagles published a program for the second year and this was necessary to raise over to help support their efforts The Eagles wish to thank the S3 local businesses who placed advertisements in this booklet The Juvenile bugles wish to thank everyone who helped moke this one of Ihe most successful seasons In
