Scotsdale for park By DONNA KELL But the use of has not But Mr Crowley feels there have addition to leaving the nn nriitlliimnl a By DONNA KELL Plans for a sculpture park at Scotsdale Form will depend on the Ontario government loosening the purse strings on a bequest according to a local craftsman Thorn Crowley sent the Ontario Heritage Foundation plans for a Sculpture Park where people could go and walk they could pic nic Mr Crowley said his proposal would cost an estimated to research I dont have resources said Mr Crowley who- asked the Ministry of Culture and Communications to pay for a feasibility study for the park proposal We did turn him down initially but not flatly said Brian Rogers acting supervisor of property management for the We told him you need a third party to Investigate the proposal The boll is basically back in his But Mr Crowley said the OHF should give him the money He said that in 1982 Violet and Stewart Ben nett then recentlydeceased owners of the five houses and M0 acres that make up Scotsdale Form left over to the Ontario The land was given to them OHF and the money was provided lo help maintain the property said Mr Crowley From my informa tion It was bequeathed to the people of Ontario Mr Crowley added that a sculpture park would enhance the farm setting Imagine the Henry Moore sculpture at and McCaul transported and discovered around a bend In a path through Scotsdale and you can capture the experience this park can produce said Mr Crowley in his proposal to the OHF But the use of Scotsdale has not yet been declared Although lions ore under way with the DufferinPcel Separate School Board to lease the land for a recrea tional facility the Board and Scotsdates managers the Credit Valley Conservation Authority have met only once With the Halton Board of Educa tions recently approved outdoor education policy board will pur sue negotiations with the CVCA for access to Scotsdale as stated In a recommendation passed Nov But the Board has been of fered Scotsdale twice and theyve turned it down both times said Mr Rogers He added that while the door Is still open for negotiations the board has not yet contacted the CVCA or the OHF He said the Board should act quickly And If any parties are interested in now is the time to make a proposal The OHF has maintained the Scotsdale Farm facilities since 1982 when they became deed holders Mr Rogers says no specific use of the farm was designated by the Ben netts but he feels the must maintain a certain vision of the Bennetts goals Mr Crowley charges that the pro perty which he says hes known or 18 years is not being well- maintained He said It could be con sidered dangerous for public use and not secure from Intrusions We spent a lot of money on capital improvements said Mr Rogers The money was provided by the trust fund established for Scotsdale But Mr Crowley feels there have been no additional Improvements to warrant expenditures Although unsuccessful in his bid obtain a portion of the 700000 to fund his sculpture project Mr Crowley hat gained support from private Daniel Pokom president of the Sculptors Society of Canada said a sculpture park In Scotsdale would strengthen the position of Canadian sculpture in the world And Bill Winegard MP for sent Mr Crowley a letter In support of he Sculpture Park writing I am sure thai ihe concept would have been strongly supported by the Bennetts themselves They were great sculpture fans But final say goes to the The property was given to the with no strings The Federa tion can do what they want with the property said Mr Rogers He add ed that the Bennetts bequest pointed to no specific use for the property In defence of criticisms that the land has been sitting vacant too long Mr Rogers says Founda tion Is being cautious People may think weve done too many studies but at the same time Its a large property he said The has done what Is ap propriate for be added saying the Foundation Is conscious
