Page 12 THE HERALD Wednesday January Ms Karel Sury leaving to take new position The principal of Acton High School will leave September 1969 to become principal at General Brock High School in Burlington Karel Sury a native and teacher in the Region for 23 years will leave Acton after spending five years at the schools helm Its going to be very very dif ficult leaving said Mr Sury Mon day after the Halton Board of Education announced his transfer last week But Mr Sury who will enter his eighth school in a career that has included stints with Milton District High School White Oaks School in Oakvilie and Lester B Pearson School in Burlington says he welcomes change I never stand still Im con stantly trying to learn and grow and become more more productive be said At age Mr Sury has been principal of several schools received a Master of Arts History at McMaster University in Hamilton He received his Master of Education at the University of Torontos Ontario Institute of Education Learning is a lifelong pro cess said Mr Sury who said he places heavy emphasis on staff development Mr Sury said he is not surprised with his transfer to Burlington He says that after five years at a high school such a move is expected He welcomes the next term at Acton to tie up loose ends and to finish projects now under way and Mr Sury says he looks forward to being principal at General Brock Each school has a unique character all its own he said Bev Pastor remembered by board members After a long bout with cancer Pastor 20year veteran of the Halton Board of Education died last week Mrs Pastor of Milton Joined the board in 1968 beginning her career in purchasing and then becoming secretary to the board in 1973 She was appointed Com munications Project Officer in and served there until her death Jan Mrs Pastor a recent recipient of the Celebrating Service award for her time with the board pro duced the board publications Boardwalk Our Schools A Newcomers Guide and countless other sources according to Oakvilie board trustee Janis Trustee led a ceremony and a moment of silence for Mrs Pastor at last weeks Board of Education meeting I had the privilege of being friend Bev bad many kin dred spirits she said Trustee Millman said the former Mrs Pastor was known for her excellence in the board She was skilled at her Job and pro vided superb support Mrs Millman said Mrs Pastor was approachable and well- liked for her gentle caring at titude Clark will replace Mrs Pastor as Communications Project Officer Mrs Clark was hired on a sixthmonth contract with the contract The HCSH says if smoking can be prevented in childhood and adolescence then for the vast ma jority it will be prevented altogether The HCSH is made up of five health groups Including the Addiction Research Foundation the Canadian Cancer Society the Halton Health Department the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Lung Association of Region They launched a campaign this past week to
