Herald Sports Editor Anyone wandering into Alcott Arena midway through the second period of last Saturday nights Cen Ontario Jr B Hockey League contest mightve wondered whether or not they had stumbled upon a World Wrestling Federation card in progress In a scene right out of the movie Slapshot the Georgetown Raiders and their arch rival Milton Merchants staged an old- fashioned donnybrook and when the dust had cleared it was the Raiders who claimed victory in the alley as well as on the scoreboard Raiders took a 74 win over Milton and combined with a football like winning score of 119 against Streetsville Derbys on Fri day extended their current unbeaten streak to eight games and entrenched their hold on third place in the Central loops seem wild west division RAIDERS MILTON The festivities began late in the second period when a couple of shoving matches precipitated a benchclearing brawl Raiders took exception to a foul on centre Kevin Dance and things got quick ly out of hand Raider coach Peter Sturgeon said his Milton counterpart Gary Ford cleared his bench and the Raiders followed suit It was Mickey Mouse on his part said Sturgeon But I thought we stuck up for ourselves really well We like to stick to hockey but if anybody tries to intimidate us we can handle it Ford denied clearing his bench saying he was only trying to even things They the middle of a line change and had about 10 guys out there said Ford Apparently Sturgeon and Ford former linemates with the old in termediate Raiders had words during the brawl In the aftermath of the main event which lasted between five and 10 minutes Raiders lost five players to suspensions Rod Pasma will sit out four games while Ciglen Chris Lee and Kevin Dance will miss two each Greg Brazeau will cool his heels foronegame Meanwhile in the scoring department Brent fired a hat trick for Georgetown with Chuck finding the range twice Single goals went to Kelly Foster and captain Mark Pries Kevin Dance and each had two assists and Rob Shannon Storr Travis Cole Don Cruise and had single helpers Todd King faced shots in the Raider net RAIDERS STREETSVILLE In Fridays battle for third place the Raiders saw a 61 first period lead evaporate as Georgetown again succumbed to Its plicable second period jinx I dont know what the hell it is with the second period in our building said a perplexed Sturgeon Streetsville scored six goals in the middle frame and two more in the third as Georgetown soon found clinging precariously to a slim lead Kevin Dance fivegoal night But the big story of the night was diminutive centre Kevin Dance and the fiery pivots fifth goal of the night into an empty Derby net with only a handful of seconds left in the game sealed a Raider win Fridays game ended as a war mup for Saturday nights mam event as Streetsvilles Taylor threw his stick at Dance as he scored number five Dance and Taylor went at it in a spirited battle behind the net before J P Latour took on Randy opportunity knocks Call PsulSvoboda Editor Youve beard It said before When opportunity knocks youve got to answer fast Well Curtis Green did just that last Thursday night as the Georgetown Raider made his major junior A debut Green donned the colors of the Guelph Platers overcame a bad case of the butterflies and turned aside 40 shots as the OHL club lost a close decision in Niagara Falls to the league- leading Thunder I was nervous and I felt kind of weird at first Green said of his first taste of major junior hockey But once I got a couple of shots I felt better Greens opportunity arose through a combination of luck and effort The yearold puckstopper had been the hottest goaltender in the Raider camp of late and he was a logical choice when a bad break left the Platen without a backup to regular starter Mike Parsons Bad luck for one is often good luck for another and Pat broken arm turned out to be a break for Green Guelph which maintains a work ing agreement with the Raiders invited Green to work out with the club last Wednesday and be was given the start on Thursday in the Thunderdome the affec tionately renamed Memorial Arena home of the transplanted Thunder formerly Hamilton Steelhawks Greens performance was im enough to get him in vited back to Guelph tonight where suit up in a backup capacity to Parsons in a Plater home game against London Knights They said I played well and theyre going to be using me for a couple of games until our season is over explained Green of Guelphs intentions In other words if the Raiders make an early unscheduled exit from the playoffs Green could finish his season in Guelph The Platers also intend on inviting the goalie to camp next fall Green who had been toying with the idea of playing universi ty hockey next year If my marks are good enough would certainly consider a change of plans if Guelph comes calling next season Meanwhile riding the crest of an eight game unbeaten streak and making serious noises about challenging for the top two spots in the Central B loops western circuit the Raiders 198889 resurgence coincides nicely with Greensrecent rise Overlooked in last years midget draft Green began the season in an understudy role to veteran Georgetown starter Todd King With diligent work to eliminate a penchant for flopp ing Green has developed into a steady performer and when be caught fire a couple of weeks ago Raider coach Pete Sturgeon stuck with the hot hand So while Sturgeon and the en tire Raider brass are fully behind Greens opportunity they also hope his move to Guelph will be delayed by a champion ship banner or two Instead of Heaven can wait how about can wait
