Page THE HERALD Wednesday February 8 WI meets By KAY WILSON Norval Correspondent Former resident celebrates 103rd old tuners will be pleased to know that Mrs Ellen Shlpp of Essex will be celebrating her birthday on Feb l Mrs Shipp along with her late husband Fred were former Hornby area residents in the 1930s Mrs Shipp was very talented in drama and while ing here she directed many plays for the Norval Junior Farmers as weH as pageants for St Stephens Anglican Church in Hornby She directed plays for young and old alike in the com munity that numbered around 60 people One pageant was The Coming of the White Man The play por the early Indian days both in song and dance The play included covered wagons and a minuet dance by 12 couples The ladies wore varied colored crepe paper dresses with many frills and flounces all home made The gents wore dark suits white shirts and black bow ties The best part of the pageants were the rehearsals that were held in the early spring evenings m the farm yard of Graham later the Ford farm on Trafalgar Road The pageant was staged on the front lawn at Mr and Mrs Shipps farm home They were also held m Milton and Bramp ton Also in the 30s Mrs Shipp assisted the late author Montgomery the ministers wife in Norval in directing the Old Time Concerts This musical event was held in the parish hall now the Elks Hall in Norval It was staged for two consecutive nights in the early spring and members again came from a wide area as well as in and around The cast wore old time clothes which most families had handy from their parents or grandparents not like today when people rent their costumes There was a wealth of talent in those days as families entertain ed themselves around the organ or piano singing every song in the book These are just two examples of how young and old enjoyed their recreation Mrs Shipp continues to keep abreast of the town and church activities She keeps her own home where the door is always open Her
