Milton woman Both drivers escaped injury Lead level check Testing begins at schools Two North Halton high schools will be among 21 schools tested by the Ministry of Education for high levels of lead in the water system The ministry delivered a direc tive recently saying that all elementary schools in the province would be tested for lead levels above 50 parts of lead per billion parts of water and that over 20 secondary schools across the pro vince built in the last five years would also be tested In addition to all elementary schools in Region Bishop Reding Secondary School and EC Drury High School both in Milton will be tested within the next month for lead levels Halton Board of Education Superintendent Jerry Jenkins said the testing would run from six to eight weeks The Ministry of Education hired Brampton laboratory consulting firm Beak Consultants Ltd to issue bottles for samples to schools be ing tested said Mr Jenkins Lead level testing began in Halton Region and across Ontario after the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation released data indicating that lead levels were high in Ontario schools water systems Lead pipes and lead solder in pipes were said to be the cause The Ministry of Education began conducting their own study in the fall of 1988 concluding that one school in Region Abbey Lane Public School of Burlington registered lead levels in excess of the ppb safety level Abbey Lane measured in at On Nov 28 thV ministry released a directive telling all schools in the province to flush their taps for five minutes each morning The flushing clears some of the builtup lead in pipes said Board of Education spokesman Brian Woodland Mr Woodland said that lead levels were highest when the pipes were unused But any number above accep table lead levels does
