all The junior girls made it a homecourt double gold ceremony on Monday as they outlasted Lord Elgin Lancers in a fivegame thriller to capture their first Halton crown in recent memory They have an excellent tradi tion with a strong feeder system and a good junior program said Aldershot coach Juri after the senior final in probably as good a summation of the Rebel spiking dynasty as anyone could offer I only saw Georgetown once this year but I know theyre always good While coach Clarkes senior snowed Hrdlickas charges no mercy in rolling to their fourth consecutive Halton gold medal in three straight games 158 158 and 1511 Shirley Whites junior squad kept fans on the edge of their seats by winning it the hard way in five nailbiting games It feels good especially since it went five games said White after the junior received their gold medals The momentum in volleyball can go back and forth but we knew we could win it after the fourth game Indeed the junior biggest margin of victory in the fivegame set came in game four with a 156 win That followed- an opening game loss of 815 a game two re bound of 158 and a close 1015 loss in game three Georgetown came out flying in the final tilt to build up a score with the catalyst being the strong spiking of Holly Lord Elgin fought back to within one point of Georgetown at 76 but the Rebels took control again and were never behind in the entire game as they posted a 158 final We knew we had a fight on our hands but we felt good coming in said Lord Elgin coach Elli Arm strong Our girls really played hard Meanwhile Clarke was I Reaching to capture the county crown in an exciting five- me final match Herald photo delighted that his senior Rebels picked playoff time to develop some consistency in their play Despite a strong regular season the GDHS squad had been plagued With some occasional bouts of er ratic play If we had a problem all year it was inconsistency said Clarke But we started playing con sistently against Oakville- Trafalgar and we did even better today Senior Rebel cocaptains Burroughs and Jen Irwin echoed their mentors comments We had no lapses today said Bur roughs whose presence at the net was a constant thorn in Aldershots side throughout the threegame final We were very consistent to day We were pretty motivated said Irwin who agreed that Clarkes contagious cheerleader- style of coaching helped fire up the Halton champs But while the junior Rebels can now savor their crown until next season the senior Rebels are right back in the spiking wars to day at the GHAC tournament being hosted by Miltons EC Secondary School Georgetown will meet Hamiltons Brebeuf in one GHAC preliminary game while Aldershot meets Scott Park in the other Clarke acknowledged a couple of strong players on the Brebeuf assistant coach Sturgeon positive despite second early exit The mood outside the Georgetown Raider dressing room was a sombre one The Raiders had just been eliminated by the Oakville Blades and head coach Peter Sturgeon was pacing the hallway Occasionally Sturgeon would wander back into the dressing room He chatted briefly with assistant coaches Jay Anderson and Jim Storr But mainly he paced No doubt wondering about a season that might have been Later standing by the players exit Sturgeon spoke of his disap pointment in being sidelined in four straight games by the same Oakville Blade club that turned the same trick on the Gemini last season He spoke of missed op portunities He obviously wasnt doing cartwheels over the of ficiating in the series but he stood by his game plan He stood by his offence and a young but enthusiastic defence that the Raiders had earlier in he season decided to live or die with One by one Raider players fil ed out of the dressing room and headed for the team bus Sturgeon had a word of en couragement for each of them Nice game JP Tough one Dancer Good work Braz As the immediacy of the loss began to pass Sturgeon turned his mind to brighter thoughts Sure Im disappointed in the loss but youve got to look at the positive aspects of the season he said Hey Ihave to Sturgeon mentioned a tur naround season A move up the west division standings from sixth place to fourth An increase In points from to A cut in goals against from to 214 He spoke of players like Travis Cole wanting to come back to Georgetown from college to play with the revamped Raiders He talked of individuals developing Guys like Trent Cull and Rod Pasma wholl likely be high picks in the upcoming midget priority draft He thought of graduating players like Don Cruise Chuck Loreto and Todd King who stand to be rewarded for their hard work by being offered hockey scholarships next season to US schools He talked of next season when about 10 members of the 8889 crew should be returning to Georgetown to provide a solid nucleus for another run In the end Sturgeon was the kind of coach the kind of person hes been all season A realist a straightshooter But a positive one Future Raiders can only benefit from that RAIDER RAMBLINGS Goaltender Curtis Green will rejoin the Guelph Platers for like ly the remainder of their season once he rests a sore knee Green got a look by the Platers in a game last month in Niagara Falls and the club was im pressed enough to invite him back after the Raiders season was over While several clubs have expressed interest in young Raider rearguards Cull and Pasma it seems Kingston Raiders are most interested in Cull while the Kitchener Rangers covet Pasma
