edited for a fami ly newspaper describes some of my feeling This column has in the past been devoted to local business issues However this week I am going to deal with a few items that have caused my cloudy mood What caused this temporary lapse of good judgement Well I paid my municipal tax bill and did my income tax in rough form before I made contributions to my jlan This got me thinking about some of the government pro grams that our tax dollars support and which I totally disagree with Chamber Made For mental health this is something that we should not do Lets start with the municipal tax bill which finances local regional and educational programs My bill is now more than what I paid for principal interest and taxes on my first house purchased in 1971 I now live in a larger house However it just goes to show that even if you can pay off your mortgage you will be subject to an ever- COIN a phrase increasing tax burden The Town of Halton Hills has done a good job in holding taxes down over the years but has any government in recent memory reduced its tax bite If you know of one please con tact me Lets look at the Ontario Govern ment and specifically two pro grams that were put in place to win votes one for the former PC government of Bill Davis the se cond by our current Liberal government Rent Controls a pro gram put in place by Bill Davis and further modified by David Peter son has effectively stopped new apartment construction in Southern Ontario This intrusion in the marketplace has helped pro tect tenants from some of the real world market costs that homeowners and potential home Dream network on line A dream network for in vestors and entrepreneurs is now up and running and generating new business opportunities across Canada the President of the Hills Chamber of Com merce said today The Canada Opportunities In vestment Network COIN was launched formally by Chambers of Commerce in the four Atlantic Provinces Manitoba and Ontario in January and car you must have in surance which is a good law In the past many drivers did not pur chase insurance but instead tool the chance Responding to political pressure the Ontario government put the Board in place to regulate premium increases and to make all drivers equal when purchasing insurance regardless of age The Board recommended an average I increase of almost eight per cent However some drivers are going to get a real shock when their bill ar rives The government has once DONT FACE THE NEW TAX LAWS ALONE With the sweeping changes in the tax laws many Canadians are confused as to how
