Venereal diseases on increase Cases of sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in Halton And an alarming number of cases occur in females and the to 24year old age group s medical officer of health Dr Graham Pollett says In 1988 177 cases of genital chlamydia were reported com pared to cases the previous year Of the cases reported 1988 occurred in females and per cent of the cases were diagnosed in the 15 to 24yearold age group Pollett said Although the number of cases of gonorrhea has dropped from in to in 1988 females still out numbered males to in diagnosed cases and per cent of the cases occurred in the to 24- yearold age group The high infection rate of rhea and chlamydia in the 15 to 24- yearold age group should be of concern according to Dr Pollett About per cent of the reported cases were in females and such in fections often go undetected and untreated because the symptoms are not prevalent said Pollett If those diseases are untreated it may lead to Infection and tubal scarring resulting in ectopic pregnancies in females and infer In Iwth males and females And a strain of gonorrhea which is resistant to penicillin is increas ing in Ontario said Dr In that strain accounted for just under three cent of all gonor rfaea cases reported In Ontario but the three cases reported in last year does not represent a significant increase said The number of diagnosed cases of herpes is also on the rise Only 75 cases were diagnosed in but that jumped to 99 cases last year Of those cases 72 were reported in females Man charged A Georgetown man was charg with
