THE HERALD Wednesday April 1989 Georgetown figure skaters Katherine Johnson and Jonathan Allen cut figures- as they dazzled the crowd at Memorial Arena last weekend with their dancing during the 27th annual Car nival Just This years carnival featured a southern river- boat and Caribbean cruise theme with costumes and music to match Herald photo Local skaters go cruisin Georgetown residents were treated to a cruise down the Mississippi River and on to the Caribbean Sea last weekend This cruise however did not take place on the water It took place on ice Memorial Arena was the actual venue and the 27th annual Just Cruisin carnival was the show as the Georgetown Figure Skating Club put on a delightful show last Saturday and Sunday With a boat cruise theme and featuring colorful costumes im aginative choreography and some talented local skaters the Georgetown skating club provid ed a top notch entertainment spectacle during two shows on Saturday and another two on Sun day While all members of the Georgetown Figure Skating Glut and the Georgetown Ice Dreamers Precision Skating Team took part in the annual festivities featured performers assumed a special place under the spotlight A highlight of this years feature included 17yearold Daynia a former member of the Georgetown club now skating competitively out of Mooretown and 19yearold Jeff Gavin The pair finished eighth in Canada in junior pairs in Three current members of the Georgetown club were also featured with Katie Cochrane Jonathan Allen and Katherine Johnson representing the local association as sectional skaters Jazz and blues tunes ac companied the shows opening based upon a southern riverboat theme while the scene shifted to the Caribbean with a calypso beat in the shows second half Berth in Buffalo tourney final missed by minutes Peewees run out of time Playoffs open in dose games were the order of the day as week two of the Georgetown Ladies Basketball Leagues round robin playoff schedule wrapped up on Mar 29 at Centennial School The Blue Zone maintained its undefeated playoff record by edging its seasonlong rivals the Pacemakers with San dy Brownridge hooping 15 points for the winners and Jenny Smith netting for the losers California Raisins are a sur prise in the playoffs after holding on for a onebasket win over the Celtics with Susan Thorn hitting for Raisin points and Michelle Interna tional Peewee Tournament last weekend Friday evening the team met the host Buffalo Hornet team Although the locals their opponents badly in the first two periods they were behind in the score In the third Buf falo capitalized on Georgetown penalties by scoring a pair of powerplay goals to seal a vic tory Under the tournament rules Georgetown gained only a half point out of five for holding the Hornets even in the first period Weldwoods second game in their roundrobin sectional was against Bolton Kennedy In a do ordie situation the locals combin ed stellar goaltending of Seth Homer with opportunistic sniping to win all three periods and the game to take all five tourna ment points Weldwood started quickly when Mike Travers sent Andrew Mar shall on a breakaway Marshall the goalie and put the puck by him with a backhand Three minutes later Blaine Kennedy fed Matt and his 35foot slap- shot acted like a knuckleball and dipped into the net over the shoulder Bolton got one back but the locals had their five points Special mention goes to swing man Ryan Hay who alternated between forward and defence and led the team with six takeouts most of them of the stiff check variety This WinJet up their final round- robin- game with Cortland New York as the finalist decider Cor tland had won their first two games amassing nine points in the process Georgetown had to win the game and not lose more than a half point to advance The Georgetown squad played their best game of the season Goaltender Darryl was super in net and the defence was solid The exciting first period ended in a scoreless tie with making several tough saves The locals had to win the next period Less than a minute into the period Denichie dug the puck out of the Cortland comer to Michael in the slot His shot was stop ped by the goaltender but the re bound came back out tp Shannon Morris and she flipped a forehand over the sprawling goalie to give Weldwood the lead At Cortland tied it on the deflection of a corner shot But took the puck from the ensuing faceoff and let a go from the that handcuffed the goalie and Georgetown again had the lead While Keith Tippet and were killing a penal ty a few minutes later embarked on another solo rush and successfully the goalie to make it 31 The period ended with Weldwood killing a penalty ahead 31 Georgetown had to win the third period to advance to the final
