THE HERALD Wednesday April 19 Page 11 I READER OPINION J Rotary club tops target i LETTERS Young Offenders Act must be changed Dear Sir Re Crime A Problem Liberals Wont Address Over the last year as PC Cnttc for the Ministry the Solicitor General I have concern ed about the high levels of violent crime in Ontario and the devastating effects it has on the people of this province I have been particularly in in issues such as the release of dangerous psychiatric patients on Lieutenant Governors Warrants the declining support for our police by the Libera government the disturbing presence of drug abuse and related crimes and the increased incidence of and by youth street gangs In each of these areas I believe the government has failed to show the courage and leadership necessary in a contemporary growing province I have question the Solicitor General about these and other problems that the government has refused to ad I am appalled by the odd attitude of the Solicitor General regarding law enforcement in Ontario Con sistently she has failed to support police officers across this province for the effective job they do for us on a daily basis On a number of oc casions police officers have been injured or wounded while on duty and it has been the Progressive Conservative party rather than the Solicitor General or any member of the Liberal govern ment who has risen in the House to acknowledge and applaud these lifethreatening efforts The recent prominence of street gangs Metro Toronto provides an illustrative example of the problems police face in the administration of justice in Ontarjo While the number of murder convictions in Toronto declined from 58 to 51 bet and other such as assault robbery and weapons possession increased dramatically In this environment police clearly need increased support from the Ontario government However that support has been slow to arrive and as a result many people in Ontario par Metro Toronto needless live in fear while the Solicitor General refuses to provide ade quate moral or financial support for our police While changes in the Young Offenders Act would cer tainly make violent young people more accountable for their actions legal reforms are not enough The Liberal government must regain the respect of the police after mon ths of treating them like second class citizens In a civilized society criminals must be punished and lawlessness and intimidation cannot be ig nored Police are doing their best to protect the law abiding citizens of Ontario The time has come for the government to support them in these efforts rather than leaving them and the people of this pro vince in an intolerable state of in security and uncertainty Yours sincerely Bob PC Critic for the Ministry of the Solicitor General Dump would be a blunder Dear Sir The public has tried to stop the Acton quarry as a dump It seems as though big business wont let it be stopped As God put streams of clear water running through rock he knew man would pollute other streams and lakes Its time our health authorities should know whats going on Pollution from the dump could find its way into the drinking water Rock formation lets water seep through many layers Pollution and disease could fall into these layers of rock Burial ground for garbage should be put on land of clay and subsoil The quarry is on a mountain in Halton Hills draining water underground to thousands of people Health authorities should outlaw the quarry dump It it goes through it will be another blunder by man Yours truly AlberfBrooks 124 MAIN ST SOUTH
