THE HERALD Wednesday May 1989 Page 19 Even the mighty Bow hunt interrupted by the call of duty Bee BEEP Bee BEEP Bee- BEEP Bee BEEP I locited down at the noisy little black box attached to my belt pressed the red quiet button and then glanced forlornly at Manley Densmore my fishing buddy on this day You know sometimes man sometimes I could strangle this darn beeper or heave it into some very very deep water even out there and if I was looking for a new more permanent home for the little transmitter I could have done a lot worse than choosing the beautiful big pool of this stretch of Credit River a calm inviting por tion that certainly I thought must hold at least one big rainbow trout Manley had promised an im pressive spot and he had delivered on this crisp spring morning Youre not are you Manley asked innocently No I answered firmly No not that I know of anyway and to day I checked No for that beeper to go off now maybe means something bad maybe even a problem at home maybe one of thekidsissick You dont get a message with the beep asked again quite innocently Now do I look like so meone who could carry one of those big luxury jobs I mean were talkin pickup trucks and se cond hand fishin boots here Nope all I know is that someone wants me at home or the hospital Gotta go But you stay here Manley Get that big bow Ill get to a phone find out whats up and Ill be back in oh about thirty minutes Now uh save some fish for me okay And as I departed to answer the call of duty I made my way back along the rough and rugged trail that had brought us to that beautiful spot past the patch of fiddleheads that Manley had pointed out earlier a location where we had stopped to collect a batch of the tasty green vegetable Pick the ones that are curled up tight If theyre unfolded even a bit theyre too far gone Manley had advised me a raw rookie in this particular business Mmmm good Wait till you taste these boiled and buttered Well if nothin else we caught a few fiddleheads today Thanks a lot beeper I mused as I broke through some tough cedar bran ches on my way back to the truck at roadside I took a last glance at the river It was fast here and I couldnt help but reflect on how was do ing back at that calm quiet Credit Checkmates Harrison Public School chess masters did well at a recent elemen tary competition In the back to right are Stewart Houston made my long way back to where was fishing When I got back I detected a very smug satisfied smile on the countenance of my buddy At his feet lay Mr Big Bow a spectacular specimen demonstrating the spectrum of col ors for which the fish is renowned My gosh what a beautiful rainbow Look at the col ors Beautiful bow I exclaimed Then Manley looked sheepish for just a moment I owe you an assist old friend he said quietly What Well just after you left I got my line hung up Manley explain ed It was stuck bad So I grabb ed your pole You know those Lit tle Cleos youre always talkin about well theyre Hooked him right at the far edge of the pool I bet right Manley Right where I had fired about ten casts before 1 got called away Speaking of which is everything all right Len Maybe we should go answer
