Caps get approval for Brampton move HOCKEY Herald Editor Central B League officials have given the Etobicoke Capitals the green light to mo to Brampton Georgetow Raiders vice president Jack attended a 2 league meeting in which the local circuit approved of the Capitals seeking ice time in Brampton The league is much in favor of Etobicoke playing out of Brampton said Handv They re an established team and they feel they have as good a chance as anyone to get ice there The Central League s approval of the Capitals relocation bid sud denly makes Brampton a rather hot Jr B property Former Raider assistant coach Jim Storr is cur rentlv in the process of attempting to secure ice time Brampton for a proposed expansion franchise lo begin play next season While Storr told the Herald on Friday the Capitals bid will not af feet his own plans to pursue ice in Brampton Handv said the Central League would rather see an already established club move to Brampton than take in a new team Brampton never really sup ported Jr hockey but a winner said Han I m sure they can probably get ice someone will get it A more sensible move would be to take an established team While the Capitals move is still in some doubt the Central League did finalize other matters on May Among them A proposal from the Metro B leagues Henry Carr Crusaders to realign both the Melro and Central leagues was shot down by the Cen tral league The proposed realign was designed to lessen the travel east for metro area teams The league voted against expan sion proposals from both North Bay and Lindsay There 11 be no return to the inter locking lea gut schedule of two seasons ago whereby eastern and western division teams crossed over during the regular season Handy said only the Richmond Hill Dynes were strong proponents of the return while the rest of the loop voted against it Playoffs may take on a different look beginning next season Ap parently the Central league is con sidenng several options here among them having less teams in the playoffs or a system similar to the one employed by the Mid Ontano C league in which all clubs open playoffs simultaneous ly For example as in the Mid circuit the first place team would play the bottom club the se cond place club would meet the next tolast plate team and the middle clubs would playoff in a round robin Handy said the league wants to avoid situations such as last season when Etobicoke for in stance had a rather lengthy wait until its first senes The idea will be to give the teams more to shoot for and to en courage the fans to come out all year and not just after Christmas explained Handy The league will consider any changes at its July 11 scheduling meeting Midland which was expected to Submit an expansion application pulled out after changes to its club executive The league is in favor of locating a franchise in Mississauga when a proposed new arena is completed sometime in the future Storr says his group ahead in Jr B ice race ByPALLSOBODA Herald Sports Editor Former Georgetown Raider assistant coach Jim Storr should know within days whether his proposed new Brampton Jr B hockey team is a go Storr tabled his proposal for a Brampton Jr expansion before the Ontario Hockej Association last Thursday and he said he expects an answer from the OHA within d Jim Storr was a fact finding session explained Storr of Thursday s meeting The OHA wanted to know who we are who s on our ex our budget where we re going to get our kids etc While Storr has been busy over the past two weeks lining up pro spective corporate sponsors an ex fundraising personnel and ice time he s suddenly found a new challenge on his hands with the Central league Capitals announcing plans to try to relocate their club in Brampton But Storr said Friday the bid by to relocate in Brampton is contingent upon the Capitals ability to secure ice in Brampton and he feels his group may be in a stronger position in that regard We re still in the process of negotiating for ice time preferably at Arena he said The Brampton Mmor Hockey Association has been very receptive Right now I d say it an situation but also has its eyes on other arenas If the OHA agrees to let move to Brampton then they can argue against Brampton coming to Brampton We ve had several challenges and managed to keep our heads up Storr maintains that community support for his project Is tremen dous and he implied that the city of Brampton may be more recep tive to a new Brampton based franchise rather than a relocated jam Brampton Parks and Recreation official Don was quoted in an Apr 26 Brampton newspaper as saying the city would not give up community ice time for a community team We re staying positive about Brampton con Storr received tremendous support from the BMHA and the local community and wt re feeling pretty strong With breathing down their necks and the OHA ready to consider his application and his group would like to lock up an ice time agreement in Brampton as soon as possible Storr executive which he said numbers 17 at the moment met for the first time officially on Monday to discuss current and future plans and to assign responsibilities As for past fa lures in Brampton Storr said his group- re mains unconcerned We re brand new and we d like to prove ourselves on our own merit Ninetyeight per cent of the people we ve talked to are in favor of it Brampton s loaded with business and it a good town for supporting local sports Its a good hockey town I Kicking the habit There was plenty of martial arts action at Cedarvale Gym last Saturday as Karate Club hosted Its annual local competition Here Dan McNeil of Georgetown left battles Justin also of Georgetown in a bout while a judge looks on in the background McNeil eventually won the match Herald photo by Brian MacLeod Sign up for minor ball hockey It was suggested to the Georgetown Ball Hockey Association executive committee by the community in general that a minors program is needed in Georgetown The GBHA ex ecutives created and filled a posi to research the number of m terested participants in a minor league A tentative date in the of July was set for a clinic to be held for interested players ages 16 through 18 To get an idea of how many players would at tend the clinic was to be by in vitation only To get an invitation a sign in was held at the Georgetown District High School An announcement of the sign in was done for three consecutive days before the actual sign in The reaction at the sign in was zero Not one person signed up for the clinic Ball hockey which is a rapidly growing sport is getting no recognition on a local level In a hockey town such as Georgetown this is hard to swallow If any players between the ages 16 and 18 are interested please call 877 1231 to get on the list The last day to sign up will be May Call now Wanted A nickname for North ruggers 1 The North Halton Ru by Foot ball Club needs help Help What do you mean help you might ask They ve been around for a number of years now you might point out They have a dedicated founder president coach in Sandy Mackenzie They have a pool of about 50 players once their summer season kicks off They have a ready feeder system with the game flourishing at both local high schools and after years of bouncing between and GDHS athletic fields they finally have a permanent home at Neilson s Field And furthermore you could add they re always c mpetitive third place last year in the Niagara Rugby Union B Divi and they wire baptized in tenia by deflating an English touring side They have some top flight players captain Terry an Ontario university all star Cam a former Ontario Under 21 player and Rob Paul an ex Ontano junior team man to name a few So come on you might sum What s the problem Well it simple The North Halton Rugby Football Club needs a nickname 1 recall discussing this same situation with Sandy Mackenzie and a few senior members of the club over a couple of cold beers at the Station House last spring But I feel that after one full season of struggling with NHRFC headlines it s now high lime the club adopted a nickname Now several rugby clubs dut to the Old World nature of the game and its guarded amateur status in Bnlain have avoided adopting names Most thai have prefer teutonic si or mythological handles often reflecting the days of Sir and the Knights of the Round Table Barbarians Vikings Crusaders Centaurs That type of thing Some choose to honor their hentage Scottish Wasps etc Still others opt for animalistic appeal Hornets Lions Bulldogs Wombats For North Hallon there some obvious choices A play on North for instance Norsemen Not bad Better than Northmen remember the ill fated World North Halton Hooligans Well Pretty good but lately with the game growing and the competition for those Sport Canada dollars becoming ever in tense a lot of clubs have chosen to ignore names suggesting any form of brutish No no no Here s the obvious choice North Highlanders It flows nicely off the tongue It has that Old World attachment rugby players so dearly em brace It aptly reflects Halton Hills and after all Sandy Mackenzie is of Scottish ancestry I hC Good luck in 89 Norths Mothers Day Hey kids Bnng your mother to the Family Swim on Sunday May and we will give her a flower Georgetown and Acton Pools pm Recreation Department
