Page 22 THE HERALD Wednesday May 10 198 King and Queen crowned in Acton School pageant The new King and Queen of Ac ton High School were crowned at the end of the schools second an nual talent pageant held May 4 Last years Acton high school Queen handed over her crown to Cathie Coguard Grade 11 and Mike Grade and the were each awarded and a gift certificate from the Olde Hide House in Acton Ironically and unbeknown to the judges the Actons King and Queen are an actual couple Judging from the smiles that came across their faces upon being proclaimed royalty the two were ecstatic with their new found fame The contestants eight girls and three boys were judged on their presentation of casual and formal wear a talent routine and their answer to a spontaneous question Th pageant judges were made up of two representatives from the Global television program Kids Beat Dave Hatch and Kim chuki Halton Hills Councillor Robert Heaton and Ben from the Halton Hills Herald When asked why the judges chose them over the other pageant contestants Ms Coguard replied they communicated well with the audience Along with contestants Andrea Gudgeon and Tim Tibbett the two performed in the words of Ms a disco down number to the beat of the Swedish pop band ABBA The audience was also treated to a variety of other acts including a rendition of a punk rock song a soft shoe to the Pink Panther theme and a choreographed dance that incorporated a foot streamer Royalty and the glamorous duties that go along with it the two started off last Friday nights school dance were not the only motivating factors behind them entering the contest Mr Brouwer said he entered for the money but quickly added the idea of having Graduate Lorraine Mary Elizabeth Tad- man BA will from Toronto School ROLILLAHD Herald Special SADD members from the area got together on May 3 from 1115 am until pm to discuss the problem of drinking and driv ing in a workshop entitled Lets Dare to Care Together Recently there was a court in junction in the United States which prohibits the use of the title SADD Students Against Drunk Driving in Canada In Ontario the new title is OSAID Ontario Students Against Impaired Driv ing Here in Georgetown the new name is Rebels Against prinking and Driving The other schools involved who took part in this sharing of ideas at the Georgetown high school were Centennial Public School Bishop Reding Acton and Stewarttown At the beginning of the day there were words of welcome from the Georgetown high school teachers Mavis Mascola and Sam Assad Then the students were invited to take part in the Cocktail party without the cocktails There were various fruit juices and muffins cookies and tea biscuits available The students broke for lunch at noon but resumed the workshop at 1 pm to listen to Constable Scott Mason of the Regional Police Force speak about the legal aspect of drinking and driving He also spoke about real life ex- he has had as a policeman in situations which in volved the problem of drunk drivers North Walt Elliot and Betty Moore superintendent for the board were also pre sent for part of the workshop of concerned students Each student was given a folder containing informative articles written about the subject in cluding facts about drinking and driving which stated that for the first offence of impaired driving the driver could receive up to six months in prison or his or her licence could be revoked for up to three years During the workshop ideas were discussed as to how to make drink ing and driving less of a problem Georgetown high school wants to start up a taxi service for members of the school Under the taxi service system students after paying a small fee would be able to call a taxi to come and pick them up wherever they may be and drive them home would pay for the ride and the student would then pay back the school Everyone who attended the workshop thought that this was an excellent idea With any luck it will start soon into the next school year Georgetown high school OSAID members would prefer to do more practical work than educational for the town It is a good possibility that there will
