directors meeting on Wednesday the association denied a franchise ap plication submitted by former Georgetown Raider assistant coach Jim Storr who has been at tempting to start up a new Jr squad in the Peel County city The application was denied reported OHA president Brent Ladds last week went on to say that three factors were para mount in the decision not to grant the franchise to Stores group specifically there were some objections from various members for example explained Ladds Also some concern was raised on the board in respect to the depth of the application We understood Jim was sincere but it was felt the community support was Ladds also said the lack of a firm ice time commitment from the Brampton Minor Hockey Associa tion to Storrs organization also hurt the application There seemed to be a lot of unrest in the community said Ladds Usually an application is pretty clean Storr meanwhile was obviously not pleased with the OHAs deci sion but he remained philosophical when reached for comment on Monday morning Right now Im just going over it all in my mind he said Im try ing to get an idea where we went wrong Apparently a group can appeal an decision if done so within seven days As to whether or not that would be the path chosen by his group preferred to offer no comment The situation regarding a Jr club in Brampton had become rather complicated since Storr an nounced his plans to seek an ex pansion franchise last month The Central B leagues Capitals received the circuits ap proval two weeks ago to go ahead with their plans to attempt to relocate the franchise in Bramp ton That move was contingent upon receiving ice time com mitments from the But on Friday Ladds said the OHA had yet to hear from the Etobicoke club We havent been approached by them yet he stated Ladds said setting up a brand new club in Brampton might lead to a saturation of the area par ticularly in terms of the number of local teams searching for talent With Georgetown Caledon Bramalea and possibly Acton already drawing out of the Bramp ton area Ladds said the situation makes the BMHA a target DOWNTOWN FAX SERVICE Evenings Saturdays Too Ill VOUMI ITO Sports Editor Georgetowns Adam Bennett has yet to play a game in the National Hockey League but hes already becoming familiar with some NHL rinks The 18yearold former Georgetown Gemini rearguard returned Monday from Winnipeg where he was treated to a whirl wind tour of the city and the home facilities of the Jets Next weekend its off to New Jersey to meet with officials of the Devils Its all part of being the sixth- ranked eligible junior player in North America as the June NHL entry draft approaches Its still tough to say where Ill go said Bennett regarding speculation on what NHL club will nab the Sudbury Wolves defenceman Its looking pretty positive I dont think Ill make it past Minnesota With Minnesota drafting seventh in the first round that means Ben nett could very well end up on one of six clubs drafting ahead of the North Stars That list includes Quebec first New York Islanders Toronto Maple Leafs Winnipeg New Jersey and at sixth position the Chicago Bennett who just completed his first year of major junior hockey in Sudbury has already met with both the and Islanders Therefore it is possible he could still end up in the top three despite being ranked number six among North American juniors by the NHLs Central Scouting Bureau Every team has its own scouting unit said Bennett refer ring to his predraft ranking Ac cording to my agent New Jersey is pretty high on me but you can never tell until draft day Meanwhile Bennett joined two other highlyrated North American junior products in Winnipeg last weekend for a battery of physical fitness tests and an informal din- with Jets officials Joining Bennett were Belleville Bulls cen tre Scott Thornton and Western Hockey League star Stu Barnes While Winnipeg has had a history of drafting large in the past Dave Babych now with Hartford and Jim Kyte for example Bennett said its anyones guess until June 17 They Jets still dont know what theyre looking for he speculated They also have a history of drafting Europeans but they said theyll be drafting more Canadians now Theyre also still in the stages of hiring a coach They seemed like a really nice bunch of people I was pretty pleas ed While the big day approaches Bennett will be hard at work preparing for his sophomore season in Sudbury The Wolves have sent him the clubs pre season offseason training pro gram a tough regimen based on that of the Washington Capitals Sudbury has let the word out that all veterans must follow their program- or you wont be in Sud bury said Bennett Theyre pretty strict with it Bennett will be a regular at the GDHS track this summer working on- a fitness program that centres around and 400metre sprints with longer distances on the weekend Hell also be hard at it in the weight room working on both explosive upper body power and muscular endurance He hopes to hit fall training camp at a solid a gain of five pounds from his weight at the end of last season Bennett said he began the season at but made muscular gains all during his first OHL campaign instead of shedding poundage They fed me well he quipped referring to his Sudbury billets While Bennetts actual position in the first round of the upcoming NHL draft does remain in some doubt theres at least one thing for sure hell be prepared both physically and mentally- when his name is called on June Cannonading Danny can still call em And theres Serge with his patented Savardian move he wheels he Jets it go a cannonading drive But makes a scin tillating save and Recognize the words Of course you do Or at least if you were weaned on Hockey Night In Canada back in the 60s and 70s you do Danny Gallivan Whether you loved the Habs or detested the well even if you hated Montreal you had to admit Gallivan could sure call a hockey game Gallivan was one of the featured guest speakers at the annual Sports Celebrity Dinner in Guelph last Wednesday an occa sion I had the honor of attending as a hungry spectator more on that later When the former voice of the Les Habs took the podium it all came back in an instant The voice the words the changing tempo of his delivery Danny Gallivan can still call em Of course was obliged to regale the assembled hundreds with the timehonored tale of how he invented the word can nonading Oh sure its there in your han dy copy of Funk and But nobody ever used it like Gallivan to originally describe a point offering from the legendary Boomer Geoffrion After coining jthe phrase Gallivan apparently received a letter from a rather snobbish English prof who admonished the voice of Habs for his bastar dization of the English language With a response to warm the hearts of any journalists in the dinner crowd Gallivan told of how he wrote an equally terse to reply to his scolder explaining that while indeed there was no such use of the word before there most certainly was now Gallivan displayed a sharp wit tremendous bank of hockey- oriented jokes and anecdotes surprise surprise and was In all a delight On the serious side his message was clear He said Shame shame to professional athletes who tarnish their public image with drug arrests alcohol violations and the like Athletes are heroes to youth Gallivan in toned It was clear he feels thelr to our future does not end after the final whistle To add impetus to that statement a shining example of what a profes sional athlete is all about sat next to Gallivan DarrylSittler Now back to the hungry bit The dinner was held at Guelphs ItaloCanadlan club and while I firmly believe I was a gladiator in a former life my voraciousness in the face of a twohour seven- course Italian meal did nothing to diminish that belief Why I not only outate growingyounglad and Rod I even outate his old man Ray who from what I could see can also pack the groceries with the best of them My only disappointment of the evening was letting down Dave Kentner in the clutch After Dave cheered me through six rounds I was unable to answer the bell for round seven
