45 Main St N FORD HUH Home Newspaper of Hills FREE DISTRIBUTION WEDNESDAY MAY 24th 1989 Hometown tourists Region backing Milton dumpsite If Halton Region has a strong voice in provincial government three appeals launched by groups against the proposed Regional landfill site in Milton could fall on deaf ears Halton Region said In a report last week that it is content with the choice of the Consolidated Hearings Board which chose a site on Highway in Milton over a Burlington site near The Region spent 10 million in years to research a landfill site for garbage which is be ing shipped out of the Region as far away as New York The Region is prepared to pro ceed to landfill at Milton in ac cordance with the conditions ordered by the Joint Board says a Regional report The Region of Halton respect fully requests that Ontario Cabinet uphold the decision in favor of Site in Milton a Regional report prepared for Cabinet revealed last week But local groups had days from Feb to launch an appeal against the proposed site south of Brittania Road The provincial government received appeals from the Town of Milton the Milton Area Citizens Coalition and Investments Limited The Town of Milton claims that a test pit dug at the Highway site in April last year revealed frac tures in an unweathered till They say this evidence was not presented to the Consolidated Hearings Board But the Region argues that Milton had a chance to present its evidence The Regional report responding to the Town of Milton also says the issue is not whether fractures exist but whether or not water or leachate water con taminated by garbage would flow through the ground It is respectfully submitted to the Provincial Cabinet that if the Town of Milton had concerns about the suitability of the unweathered till at Site in Milton for use as liner material it had ample op portunity to obtain such evidence from its own witnesses while the hearing was in progress the Region said The Town of Milton for reasons which are undisclosed chose not tb reveal evidence developed in a test pit during the hearing and chose to forego the opportunity to cross- examine witnesses for the Region The Milton Area Ratepayers said in their appeal to provincial Cabinet that it is not sound or reasonably necessary to ex propriate land belonging to four families on Highway 25 The Region responded saying there would be greater impact on a smaller number of people at the Milton site The Burlington site would have a milder effect on a greater number of people if ap proved The ratepayers also say the Joint Board did not take the Guidelines into consideration when choosing the Milton site The Region insists the Ontario Municipal Board and the En vironmental Assessment Board considered the impact of the Guidelines on applica tions brought before them But the ratepayers say the On tario Ministry of Agriculture and Food preferred the Burlington site Continued on Page Local doctors assist prescription drug bust These hometown tourists were at be Dominion Seed House last week for their supplies for planting season The warm weather this past week bad scape with flowers Here Gus and Maria Mtkolelt of Georgetown demonstrate the beauty of this seasons floral treasures Herald photo by Donna Kell A Toronto man has been charged with counts of in connection with illegally obtained prescriptions from the Halton Hills and Burl ington areas over the past year Police say Roberto Paul Ren- dace 25 was charged Monday with illegally obtaining prescrip tions for C a codeine drug from local pharmacists in the Town of Halton Hills and the Ci ty of Burlington In a twoweek Investigation police say local pharmacists and doctors were instrumental in- help ing them solve the case This offence which is becom ing quite widespread involves receiving prescriptions for nar cotics to treat bogus illnesses a police press release says Police say under the Narcotics Control Act anyone seeking a prescription must inform the physician of any drugs prescribed in the previous 30 days Mr Rendace of was scheduled to appear in Milton Pro vincial Court for a ball hearing yesterday Tuesday afternoon He was arrested by police at his residence
