Sporti Editor Its called the fastest game on two feet Its also officially Canadas national game Its lacrosse Or as refers to the more common indoor version of the sport box lacrosse Its also alive and well in Acton I recall mentioning in my debut column here at the Herald last year at around this time of year that I was pleased to see one of my old favorite sports thriving in North Hal ton As the 1969 boxla season kicks or bounces into high gear let me say again its good to see the sticks colliding in Acton You have to admire the Acton Rams one of four senior men s teams in the tight knit Golden Horseshoe Lacrosse League Last year the Rams finished as league and playoff runnersup despite playing many games with as little as six men on the bench during a timeout that is Wayne Young one of the main men on the Rams stopped by the office in the spring and jokingly asked me if I knew anyone who wanted to buy a team The Rams at that time were considering operating just as a get together pick up fun team But an infusion of new talent and commitments from virtually all of last seasons veterans means the Rams are back in the thick of it for another kick at the Indian rubber ball Goaltender Steve Young holdovers like Paul Wilson George Wilson Kevin Marcoux and Van Ort are back and newcomers like hot shooting Beck a former Mississauga star and ex Jr B ace Justin Nixon have bolstered Acton lineup 1989 The youth game is also healthy in Acton with both bantam and tyke rep teams travelling in a local league that includes com petition in Kitchener Arthur and Guelph Top that off with a soft lacrosse house league players use plastic sticks and a Nerfhke ball that boasts about youngsters and Acton looks like a lacrosse stronghold The game is exciting and fun to watch and both the seniors and the kids deserve your support If youre up In Acton on a Wednesday or Thursday night this summer drop in and catch the fastest game on two feet BIG DAY Saturdays the big day for
