18- THE HERA J Wfltxxlay May 1M9 Fields remain a priority Hoosiers humble Oakville for future of local soccer By ALEX TOUGH I have to begin with the fairy tale ending to the English cup final Yes Liverpool overcame the emo tional odds to defeat crossstreet rivals Everton by after over time in an intriguing final full of tense moments good soccer lots of hard contact exciting goal mouth incidents and the exortions of an fan five minutes from time Pool now have the league title to play for with Lon dons Arsenal as their closest rivals going down to the wire the very last game of the season could be the decider What a finish And up in Glasgow another dramatic climax to the Scottish season with Rangers and Celtic opposition Celtic last seasons winners trying to stop Rangers taking the famous treble league league cup and cup championships Celtic pulled it off and Rangers had a last minute disallowed to maintain the drama right to the final whistle This Wednesday afternoon sees the European Cup final between AC Milan and Steau Bucharest which will be shown live on the sports network at m To play either team is foreboding in its own way Bucharest are an Army team and their home games are attend ed by 50000 fans of whom 80 per cent are in uniform Woe betide anyone attempting to run en the field or make trouble at their ground Milan with their vocal sup port is also quite an intimidating experience Should be another good match The sports network is doing a fine job in bringing soccer from all over to the fireside of the avid soc cer fan and I for one enjoy it all The cup final was an excellent presentation and Fosters were a superb sponsor of the event Meteor set off in defence of their league championship of the Inter County league in fine style A 61 result over any Manner squad is not to be treated lightly The An cients took the field short of fit players and a regular goalie and time eventually wore them down with Meteor biding their time and waiting for their opportunities Eagles came into the first division with Villa in opposition The newcomers to the top flight came away with a win to herald a good start The other first division clash saw take Crown and Anchor by the odd goal in three went into a two goal lead against United before United came back to equalize at the end for the tie Laurentians tied 1 with visiting Tarn OShanter and last seasons chopping block Milton defeated new boys Stingers by 10 to round off the second division Streetsville have entered a fourth team to take up the odd game in Turkosz lead Acton lacrosse reps It was an upanddown week for the Acton Cobra bantam rep box lacrosse team as the local squad won one and lost one in league competition It was one for the character building department on May as the Cobra were crushed by Kit chener in Acton Steve Brad and Jeremy Cooney were the only Cobra snipers able to solve some tough Kitchener while Turkosz and Eddie Bridge earned assists Kitchener took a first period lead and extended it to 102 with one period to go Acton took of 16 penalty minutes However it had been a different story on May as the visiting Cobra stung Guelph 74 Steve had a banner night for Acton striking for five goals while Brad rounded out the Acton attack with a pair Assists went to Jeremy Cooney 2 Todd Chumley Piper and Jason Persio took only four of 16 minutes in minor On May a scoreless third period for Acton stifled a potential comeback as the tykes were edged in a Kyle Artem Christopher Lee David La jeunesse and Thomas Wolfer the twine for Acton with Wolfer earning the lone assist had seven penalties and Acton had a pair HOUSE LEAGUE In the Acton soft lacrosse house league on May the Orange nipped the Blues 32 in a defensive struggle Dick had two goals for the big Orange and Kelly had a single Jason McGuire and John Ridley scored for the Blues ON TAP House League action goes at Acton Arena tonight begin rung at 6 30 p m with the tyke reps playing at 30 followed by the ban tam Cobra at 8 30 the second division each week The fixture will be an official game in the schedule although not counting for points in the standings No news of ladies who also began this week and of the kids If anyone has some matters they wish to see in print please let me know and Ill do my best to place it in the column As it is the Peel Halton league entrants the Falcons are waiting for changes to their schedule as first Issued as games were all over the week which does not suit the young squad nor fit into available field slots Talking of fields The squirts field at Armstrong behind Cobra at Joseph Gibbons school and the small field at Cedar vale take up most of the younger folk Main Cedarvale and Gordon Alcott have to cater to peewees bantams and seniors male and female alike which places a great toll on these facilities Usually one game per week per team is all that occurs and this is not enough to produce good players and officials There is not sufficient practise time available due to the shortage of field time Looking ahead a year or two we shall see an influx of population no doubt resulting in more soccer and other recreations players We will need more fields to cater to all shapes and sizes Whilst there is ground set aside in the new development areas around town we must ensure that none of it is for other uses Mind you it is very regrettable that town and board of education do not get together to fix the school fields for safer use At the same time it must be noticeable follow ing the refurbishing of the high school field last year and not used by soccer that the field did not long remain up to the new stan dard Considering that the payer of monies to both groups is the same parent of a club or school player it is a ridiculous situation is it not O N TXSl DIVISION OF ID1XS LTD 8777400 AIRPORT SERVICE PARCEL DELIVERY TYKE A pair of tough losses marked last weeks play for the Acton Tykes as Kitchener Braves doubled up on the home team 84 on May after the Actoti shooters had dropped a close 54 decision in Guelph the night before Thomas Wolfer had two- goals for Acton in the Kitchener loss with Paul
