THE HERALD Wednesday June 28 Page Do you know how many stars have famous kids ASK DICK KLEINER Would you please tell me bow many children of stars have become stars Ml Lawrence Mass A Its impossible to give you an ex act figure Anyhow it depends on what you mean by star There are some obvious ones Henry Fondas daughter Jane Robert son Alan Kirk Douglas son Michael and Martin Sheens sons Estevez and Charlie Sheen But would you say that Bing Crosbys son Gary and daughter Mary are stars Are Lu cille Balls daughter Lucie and son Desi Jr stars And would you say that Meredith Baxter a star is the child of a star her mother Whitney Blake was an actress but was she a star Did Leslie Howard ever play the part of Mr Fletcher in Mutiny on the Bounty Forest ID A You mean Fletcher Christian but the answer is still no he didnt It was Trevor Howard who played Cap tain in the 1962 remake We recently saw a remake of The Spiral Staircase on TV Can you tell me who were the stars in the orig inal version Grand Rapids Mich A The original which came out in 1946 starred Dorothy George Brent Ethel Barrymore Rhonda Fleming and Lanchester Was Jim Reeves killed In an air plane crash If so please tell me when and how old be was Saint John New Brunswick Batman soars at times By NADEAU Herald Special Batman has arrived after mon ths of promos and ads Can it live up to the hype No of course not But its not too shabby either Dark stylish with neoGothjc sets Batman the movie is often riveting in its look Unfortunately the editing and faulty uneven direction let the actors and sets down The story begins with Gotham Citys initial contact with the Caped Crusader terrorized crooks babbling about a huge bat with superpowers A largely corrupt police force is controlled by a notorious gangster who has made the city into a haven for thieves and hookers unsafe for decent peo ple But as Jack Napier soon to be the Joker notes decent people shouldnt live here Well Batman just doesnt see it that way Batman drops Jack into a vat of toxic green chemicals and thinks that is the end of the demented crook But Jack survives disfigured and twice as evil He kills his old boss terrifies his mistress Jerry Halt and unleashes a truly diabolical plan cosmetics laced with toxic chemicals that kill the user with a laugh and a joker smile Which gives us newsreaders without makeup pretty scary stuff Up till then the movie proceeds at a good clip although virtually all the scenes between Bruce Wayne and Vicki Vale drag and slow the pace However once Bat man defeats the Jokers scheme the script falls apart and seems to lose focus We discover what motivates Bruce Wayne to fight crime although the bat motif is never explained Somehow direc tor Tim Burton manages to make it almost anticlimactic and less than fascinating Alter that the scenes just become a little too silly The Jokers parade with its balloons full of toxic gas and Prince songs is confusing overlylong and ex cessive I found this scene un necessary and annoying However the movie ends welt with a good battle on the top of the awesomely tall and decrepit Gotham Cathedral The reason to see Batman has to be Jack Nicholson He delivers a wild insane performance as the psychotic Jack the Joker There are no holds barred here Nicholson doesnt keep anything back His Joker is evil demented and very witty He is much more interesting than Batman and his clothes are utterly priceless I simply loved Nicholson in this role The controversy in the casting was the choice of Michael Keaton as the bat I mean the guys a com ic actor and a short wimpy one at that But whatever flaws one sees in the movie Kea tons per formance is not one of them He does very well as Batman and he does look scary The costume and the camera angles make him look dam big He is restrained and understated wisely not trying to compete with Nicholsons larger- thanlife turn Kim is beautiful as always as Vicki Vale but I found the character an often annoying in trusion in the action There was something dead not fleshed out about Ms Vale and her scenes always slowed things down I dont blame Basinger for this I blame the script and director Burton OFF ANY
