Halton Board of Education trustees are less than enthusiastic about the future direction of educa recently proposed by director Bob Williams Mr Williams plan calls for the board to create an environment in which schools can act with greater However some trustees in cluding Hills Dick Howitt Judy Watson and Burl ingtons Noel Cooper said Mr Williams was too vague in proving that his plan will better the educa tion a student gets in the classroom As the board heads into the century Mr Williams wants a system In which the role of prin cipal as school leader is enhanced and that of teachers to be based more on interaction among each other In this way teachers will be better able to stay abreast of new teaching strategies Mr Williams says As part of the report Mr Williams also calls for an increase of resource leaders from two to 36 to ensure the model evolves pro perly There would be one leader for every two Their job would be similar to that of a con sultant Leaders would work close ly with their assigned two schools in the areas of curriculum im provement and new initiatives Trustee said he was convinced teachers and principals would be receptive to this influx of new people Mr Williams said he has surveyed four of the boards 66 schools and said their reaction to the plan was positive Trustee Watson expressed con cern there was no system of ac countability in place to ensure all teachers take advantage of a resource leaders talents She said it was a foregone conclusion good teachers would seek out advice That is part of the reason they are good teachers in the first place she said However the teachers who need the guidance are unlikely to seek out the available help she said Mr Williams explained resource leaders will be held accountable by the performance of teachers Ms Watson was also troubled by the possibility that attempts to make large changes to the present system imply there Is a problem with the current system However Ms Watson said it is unlikely if any one would ever admit that He said Mr Williams has yet to prove to him reallocation of resources wont work NORTH END NISSAN MARTIN STREET MILTON ONTARIO 8784137 ORGETOWN SPA TIMESS
