of his teenage daughter who had chosen to work at a summer camp for July and August as a counsellor and instructor Tor the young people coming there for a two week session at camp She didnt have to work as finan cially the family did net need the money but she wanted to work to be independent Dad had picked her up from the camp the previous Friday and driven her home Her total takehomepay for the summer had just been paid to her After deductions for lodging food snacks etc it amounted to for the two months work On Monday she went out and spent it all Is there anything wrong with that Certainly not But what if and that is a big WHAT IF our school system had taught financial matters in that school system particularly the formula for financial success namely Time plus Money plus Rate of Return Add to that the statement that we should save a part of everything we earn What if she had been taught those formulas and applied them even to her meager earnings at camp What if she had taken a part of what she earned such as and in vested 3740 into a mutual fund which averaged 15 over the years and left it until retirement age at 65 She was 14 years old then That would be worth at age Would she have missed that Probably She would only have been able to spend but would it have been worth it If she had invested it and it was worth at age 65 that could have been converted to a monthly in come of per year Statis tics today us that if a woman reaches age she is expected to live another years That means she would have collected 20 SI retirement benefits Because she invested If our school system would teach these simple financial facts and we Canadians learned them and em ployed them in our lives we would all end up wealthy able to purchase more goods and services which in turn would create more jobs which in turn would mean more profitable compan ies which in turn means our Govern ment would not need to tax us at such high rates because a lower tax rate on larger earnings by us and our em ployers would bring more taxes but would still leave us with more to spend because the tax rate is a lower percentage and if we spend more more people are employed and on and
