HIE HERALD Wednesday August 1989 Page IS 1989 HONDA CIVIC GEORGETOWN St Hwy Georgetown SALES SERVICE 8731818 Sports out of focus The sports world has regurgitated a few choice items of late if recent memory serves correct We have the Pete Wilted Rose betting scandal currently threatening the so called Integrity of the game in major league baseball circles It rumored the only thing Rose did or didnt bet on were his chances of catching a communicable disease Now Steve Garveys former wife Cyndy is claiming their relationship was asexual Cer tauily damaging to Garvey s All American image especially in light of his supposed political aspirations but equally tough to explain to the products of his marriage to Cyndy his two young daughters Scandal is brewing in Florida high school football circles with allegations that coaches fixed games to cover their gambling ventures Selfproclaimed twosport superstar Prime Time Sanders a New York Yankee farmhand presently hitting roughly his I score around 250 is demanding megabucks for his services from baseball and football This kid should be aware of the last reported Superstar and stay away from carpentry shops He should also avoid parades National Football League major domos are reportedly scratching their in a desperate search for escape routes as a result of the leagues suddenly and long overdue crackdown on performance- enhancing drugs The National Basketball Association long considered a virtual drug haven for athletes has cleaned up its act somewhat but the stigma still re mains Dont stop me yet Im on a roll No sweat eh yon hardy Canuck comments Its all hap pening in the Obnoxious States of America Wrong again oh eater of hockey puck sandwiches What about Hec the lineman with the CFLs Ed monton Eskimos suspended for alleged drug use How about Jenkins convicted on a drug charge Rob of the Blue Jays admitted to alcohol abuse and entered a treatment centre DOWNTOWN FAX SERVICE Saturdays Too ill vounci Downtown Georgetown Several years ago Bob Mur of the New York Rangers was suspended because of admit ted cocaine use Likewise that lingering Swede formerly of the Toronto Maple Leafs Salming Paul Coffey of the Pitt sburgh Penguins got dinged for indecent exposure among other things Bob Probert under suspension from both the NHL and the Detroit Red Wings tried to smug gle cocaine across the S border in his undershorts Perhaps one of the few times Pro would admit to having anything in his shorts other than his brains And of course we have poor old Ben Johnson This guy really fries my beans with his Yes I didn t No I did answers in rela to Ins performance enhancing drug experience Get out of my tree Ben the manure is threatening to break my limbs Besides that your pricey high performance sports car is blocking my driveway and I can afford to buy the house you are attempting to unload Both purchased while you were still accepting Sports Canada grants as a carded amateur athlete and claiming poverty If all the above mentioned horse droppings is sports then I think I would rather be watching dwarf tossing as practised in Australia Somehow it all seems to blend together The point to all this admitted meandering is that somewhere along the line we seem to have lost the proper focus on sports It seems that athletic excellence no longer carries the day Rather the game has become secondary to the antics and miscreant behavior of some of the participants And we blame the kids involved in sports because They sure dont think or play the way we used to Give me a break Better yet give the kids a break They sure dont have too many role models to follow Parents executives coaches and others involved minor sports should concentrate on teaching the love of the game and its particular value in lessons that can be learned and utilized in life rather than tossing dollar figures around or pointing to others who Made it At least thats as I see it Alcott tennis results in the GB Herald photo Minor hockey turmoil comes home to roost By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The Ontario Minor Hockey Association decision made in June at the annual meeting to join with the Metro Toronto Hockey League and bypass the Ontario Hockey League in dealings with the Cana Amateur Hockey Association could produce repercussions felt in Georgetown The OMHA and the form ed the Central Canadian Hockey Association as a direct result of an OHA decision to restructure minor hockey under a zone system The feehng persists among a number of hockey people that the OHA decision was made mainly for financial reasons However that doesn t alter the fact that the ongo ing feud between the and the renegade association could ultimately harm those whose best interests the rival groups sup posedly represent namely the phyers As things stand now the Amateur Hockey Association works through the OHA in pro viding sanctions for hockey activi ty in this part of Southern Ontario If the OHA and the Central Cana dian Hockey Association cant come to some kind of a workable agreement and the CAHA con tinues to recognize the OHAs presently dominant status then a lot of young hockey players could be playing In a virtual state of lira bo According to Georgetown Minor Hockey Association President Carson Mininch the local hockey structure will be affected if this fact happens The GMHA is a member of the OMHA and as of this point in tune intends to remain with the OMHA mainly for practical reasons As pointed out We have to stay with at this point That s where the majority of minor hockey groups are It would be pointless to pull out of the and then have no teams for our boys to play against The future of the Georgetown In ternational Bantam Hockey Tour would come into question because of lack of CAHA sanction Georgetown teams would not be Kinsmen girls able to play overseas and similar ly no foreign teams would be able to play against local teams if the CAHA did not give its approval If the CAHA backs the OHA Georgetown teams would not be allowed to compete for Provincial or National championships Also the affiliation between the GMHA and the Georgetown Pontiac Raiders Junior hockey team would be threatened as the Raiders currently play under the umbrella Hopefully the impasse between the feuding hockey cousins can be even if it means having the step in and lay down the law in no uncertain terms Dunlop steals win By DEE DEE HAYNES Herald Special SENIORS Insurance slipped past Pictures and Presents on ly 25 At the mound for the victors were Dee Dee
