Scouts returned from a threeweek trip to Sweden and Denmark He was one of scout leaders and scouts who attended a scout jamboree in Sweden During the first week of his trip he visited a viking museum in Copenhagen the an amusement park and the castle in Kronborg which Shakespeare used for the setting in his play Hamlet Mr said he found the churches much older and fancier than the ones hed seen in money of every dollar received through the sale of New Formula batteries to muscular research and treatment The draising drive is being launched in conjunction with the Muscular Dystrophy Associations national campaign 5 years ago This week a report was released saying that heart disease is the number one cause of death in the region and the third most frequent cause for hospitalization of males to years old It remains the leading cause of death and hospitalization for males over The disease is the second leading cause of death among the regions women between 35 and 64 Although the exact cause of heart disease is still undetermined the report suggested there is strong evidence linking the diseases cause to lack of exercise smoking diet excess alcohol and com petitive and aggressive personali ty traits Trashing Haltons new garbage dump Kells Korner Donna Kell Staff A beautiful piece of farm land in Milton is about to be crushed by the wheels of industry Picture if you will acres of green agricultural land sprawled across the west side of Highway 25 with the craggy peaks of the Niagara Escarpment in the background And picture also four farms about to get the axe by Halton Region This site is marked ter ritory This site is about to be filled with trash contaminated water flowing through its rock base and into the Amabel Aquifer an underground water source that feeds all of Milton and Halton Hills A landfill site All kinds of im ages come to mind but the most prevalent surely must be stacks of rubbish things discarded by socie ty and now laid to waste as if they were awaiting divine intervention The Town of Milton a company and an organized group of citizens are about to embark on a mission that will take them to the Supreme Court of Ontario Theyve launched a second appeal against a provin cial joint board ruling that would see Milton host all of the Regions landfill So where were the protective bodies when Milton got dubbed Site D and then Site was chosen as the sacrificial land Why the Credit Valley Cofnservation Authority speak out against the landfill site What happened to the protective body called the Niagara Escarp ment Commission Where were they when a prime piece of agricultural land within the protec tion area was put on the Regional landfill map And Halton Region didnt help much either They said the- had no qualms with approving Highway 25 as a landfill site A simple drive out to the Burl ington site speaks volumes about its suitability compared to Milton as the Regions future trash heap The Burlington site is located north of the Fronting the highway it is surrounded by some industrial land and treeless fields My unprofessional opinion is that the Burlington land is ugly and barren One glance across the countryside In Milton breaks your heart when you think that its destined to hold Big Mac cartons Saran Wrap old tires and discarded diapers Justice works in strange ways But hopefully some eyes will be opened And hopefully Milton will be allowed to appeal what seems to be a ridiculous location for the Regions trash CONE is judge jury and executioner Hewitt Dear Sir I am responding to your article in the Wednesday July 19 issue of the Herald referring to my voting record at the Niagara Escarpment Commission Once again your reporting was out to malign me rather than in form the public when you covered the recent news release by CONE Your article fails to mention that CONE in fact places eight of the 15 members of the NEC as being opposed to the plan most of the time and two some of the time These so called opposed members are comprised of seven elected and three public at large appointees The article contains a web of halftruths that must be cleaned up or the public will be mislead and the protection of the Niagara Escarpment put in penl As an elected member of the Niagara Escarpment Commission my first duty is to be fair and im partial The property owners that come to the commission with then- plans for the future have every right to expect this Unfortunately there are lobby groups who criticize anyone who doesnt follow their agenda One critic is the lobby group mentioned in your July 19 article CONE Coalition on the Niagara Escarp ment What does CONE want It wants all development in the escarpment corridor to stop In CONEs eyes any commission member who votes favor of any development is not following the plan The truth is controlled development is allowed under the plan CONE has set itself up as the judge jury and executioner And if I dont toe the line so far as CONE is concerned CONE manufactures a list of puts me down as a commissioner who op poses the plan The problem with CONEs criticisms is that theyre dead wrong The Niagara Escarpment Plan covers a huge tract of land 725 kilometres long from the Niagara area to the islands off Tobermory and the introduction of the plan says that the plan serves as a framework of ob jectives and policies to strike a balance between development preservation and the enjoyment of this important resource and the very first sentence under the heading General Develop ment Criteria says The objective is to permit reasonable enjoyment by the owners of all lots that can sustain development The Niagara Escarpment Plan does carefully control develop ment but I dont care how you cut it CONE is wrong in saying that the Niagara Escarpment Plan pro hibits development So why is CONE making a list checking it twice pointing out who they think is naughty and nice They are trying to intimidate com mission members into voting the way they see things They are saying something like We dont care what the plan says we want no development on Die escarpment and we want you to vote the way we want you to Well CONE people the Niagara Escarpment Plan was passed by a democratically elected govern ment representing all the people of Ontario not just you I am proud to give every property owner who comes before the commission a fair and impartial hearing and to apply the Niagara Escarpment Plan as it is written not as you would like it to be written If I have any advice for CONE it is read the plan I And if I have any advice for the Herald it is be fair impartial and balanced Yours truly Joe Hewitt Ward 2 Regional Councillor Niagara Escarpment Commissioner Halton Region More letters on Page 9 Taxpayers are not gullible Continued from Page 6 people with such big lots to de mand an open area He notes also that there will be a population in crease in the area because of the construction of the con dominiums I have walked this property and watched the con struction of those condominiums and observed that now more than ever it is important to retain our dwindling open space for the enjoy ment of that increasing population Mr Pilutti believes that the tax payers of Hills should ac cept his selective view of this gar bage dump and be angry I sug gest that perhaps he finds this valuable parkland unattractive because in its current state it has no dollar signs attached Mr Jackson politely observes that Mr Pilutti is not a monster but a businessman doing what is best for Mr Pilutti Im prepared to concede that But please dont try to convince us that his motivation is aesthetics and doing what is best for the town and its many residents who believe that open space is as advantageous as some additional houses I hope Council is not that gulli ble I know the taxpayers are not Sincerely Russ Jones Drive WRITE US A LETTER The Herald wants to hear from you If you have an opinion you want to express or a reserves the tight to edit letters due to space limitations or libel Water woes wont wash Weirs View Lets face it were pretty much past the point where we can be sur prised by a TV commercials sheer silliness By the time youve sat through several hundred plugs for boxcar Willies Greatest Hits several dozen spots featuring Ernest P Worrell and the fourteenth femimne hygiene commercial of the evening youve pretty well abandoned any notion that the ads will be any more enlightening and entertaining than the programs And thats when the makers of TV commercials reach right down and flabbergast you It happened just the other night There I was sitting in front of the tube with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other when it ap peared a commercial for water Im not making this up Someone actually paid for a commercial urging us to drink water At a time like this there is just one thing for the normal and well- adjusted mind to do It boggles Granted in this sadly health- conscious age weve been exposed to other commercials which urge us to consume things that are shudder good for us There are those commercials urging kids to drink milk so theyll grow up big and strong Some of us realized fairly early in life that we didnt have the type of body that would grow up big and strong no matter what we drank This is why we decided to drink beer so that we could at least grow up potbellied But an ad campaign urging us to drink water Isnt this a little well obvious You start to wonder about the other ad campaigns that may be waiting In the wings all set to be introduced to a grateful world Say perhaps- Food Try Some When Youre Hungry Or maybe Air Dont Forget to Breathe It Still lets try to be fair The point of the commercial was that most of us dont drink enough water which is probably true Let me hasten to say that I have nothing against water Water is an excellent thing in its place Without water for sprinkling our lawns would die Without water in rivers thered be no hydroelectric power And without water in the bathtub we would not be able to tolerate each other in elevators On the other hand like most of us Im not all that partial to water for drinking Not neat anyway Essentially my view is that water is much like the average child its an excellent raw material but you need to find ways to improve it Oh Im certainly not as averse to drinking water as was Fields who once proclaimed that he did not drink water on the grounds that fish in it Well this is not precisely what WC said But he wasnt making his comment in a family newspaper Still Im of the general opinion that a man who drinks water is probably a man whose wife has just swiped the last cola Or to put it another way a man who has to pour water into his glass is quite probably a man who is using cheap Scotch If hed bought the good stuff he wouldnt need more than an icecube But all of this is overlooking a much more serious and disturb ing question To wit who precisely is paying for these water commercials And why are they doing it No one likes to be a cyme But ex perience teaches us that people dont advertise a product on TV unless theyre hoping to make some money So what gives here Has Michael Wilson decided to follow up his national sales tax with the introduction of a Water Marketing Board Did your kitchen taps somehow get sold to an American multinational as part of the Free Trade Agreement Its all very mysterious And It may be some time before we get to the bottom of it In the meanwhile Its clearly up to all of us to exercise caution in the consumption of water Play it safe Mix your drinks with ginger ale instead
