Scott Nowlan left Acton he was just one young citizen from a town of 7000 Today hes top of a university student body that s nearly twice the size of his hometown The 21 yearold Acton man is launching into the busiest part of his year as students flock back to Queens University where Mr has been president of the student government since last May As September approaches the Acton District High School graduate admits a little sur prised to find himself in the top stu dent post at Queen s He says up until last October the thought of running as council president was the farthest thing from his mind But a close friend had different ideas It was the beginning of last Oc tober and I went out to lunch with a very good fnend of mute and out of she said Have you thought of running for student president As Mr recalls it he answered that question with a flat No Eight months later he found himself in the presidents seat and already running fast to keep up with his to 60hour per week job Mr Nowlan supervises a seven- person office oversees a student government with gross revenues of over million and acts as the voice of the body to government and the university ad ministration Thats on top of bis own threecourse workload and work on an honors thesis The Acton native says high school and university helped him prepare for the heavy of president While at Acton District High School Mr Nowlan took part in the crosscountry swim badminton and track teams and was on the athletic and students councils Ive always been a very involv ed person I cant just go to school and then go home he sent him on a student ex change to Australia in his Grade 12 year When you re on your own you have to really rely on yourself You learn to tw his job I may come in at the beginning of the day with a list of ten things to do and not get any done because I get phone calls and ten visits he explains Sometimes he feels a long way from Acton District High There s not too many students who come here from Acton High In fact in recent history there s been only seven says Mr But this hometown boy says there tots of things about Acton that led to his first big step into on your own initiative and you become independent he explains Mr Nowlan says he may return to Australia after his honors year as friends are calling him back to attend their weddings But thats next year For now the sociology student has a full plate at Queens He wants to set up a student drug plan to help offset the cost of prescription drugs and wants emergency helplines erected on campus Mr says its hard to describe the day today aspects of dent politics Acton High School is unique in the sense that the staff were very with the students And then of course theres mom dad and grandma and Mr isnt afraid to admit they have an active part in his present No one has ever gone to univer sity from moms side or dads side so its a sense of having to prove something he says pauses a se cond and not toobashfully adds and
