hap pened to yours truly You pull up to a red light and glance over at the car just pulling up alongside Inevitably it some dude in a hot car revving the engine and inching slowly ahead waiting for the light to turn green As if by magic the Beach Boys song Little Deuce Coupe comes blaring out of the car radio and it Show Time A little nudge on the gas pedal and all of a sudden the dude beside you is wearing a crash helmet and bears an eery resemblance to Wild Bill Elliott Maybe Rusty Wallace maybe even the king of stock car racers Richard Petty The light turns green you floor the gas pedal the car stalls and all of a sudden horns are blaring behind you people are giving you the finger as you sit in the middle of the intersection and harsh reali ty returns The car radio is now mockingly blasting out Little Old Lady From For 19yearold Keith Perkins of Glen Williams the dream lives on thanks to his father Keith Sr Keith a Grade student at Georgetown District High School is racing at Varney Speedway located just north of Mount Forest in the street stock class He is a natural driver ac cording to both his father and fnend and fellow stock car en Peter Conway Keith Sr drove late model stock cars for three years at River View Speedway near Trenton so knows of what he speaks Pete Conway drove the same car Keith is driving Good Old Number 64 for two years at the Varney Speedway The car had been but Keith Jr kept urging his father to let him try his hand in Hon The racing bug was still in Keith Sr and Pete Conway so the car was prepared by the two for the younger Perkins placed third to qualify for the 200 lap feature He was running well in the feature in the early going then on The 15th lap his brakes failed The gutsy tyro driver survived through 95 laps before being forced to retire The younger Perkins has been given a taste of life in the fast lane and now wants a bigger bite of the pie Keith Sr construction manager with Canada Limited in Burlington has given his son the green flag to continue The elder Perkins estimates it costs approximately to run at for the season and the team will continue this year until the season ends in October Depending on how
