THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday October 1989- Page IS Entertainment Outlook Penn and Teller team up to make movie magic FILMETER PENN TELLER GET KILLED It If youve seen them on David Let- or in their live show you know that Teller are new- wave tricksters magicians who spend as much time demystifying magic as creating it With a deadpan style that suggests suppressed hyste ria PT are clearly a specialized taste Those who like them respond to both their skill and their rugpulling prankishness nonfans are merely ir ritated Now the Bad Boys of Magic have made their first film and though far from a good movie in con ventional terms it is an audacious showcase for the duo Directed by Arthur Bonnie and Clyde who is no relation to the of the title the film continues the cruel tricks that the twosome per formed in a recently released video Whats funny here is how increasingly close to sadism and bloody outrage the characters and situations are al lowed to go Were grossed out and then we discover its only a practical joke The plot is merely a gimmick to set up this series of jokes It springs from PENN left and Teller right the bad boys of magic seek protection with a policewoman Clarke when becomes the target of a homicidal maniac in Penn Teller Get Killed a TV talk show sequence where in a moment of perversity Penh an nounces that he wishes someone would try to kill him He almost gets his wish The film is hardly seamless When the malicious humor doesnt explode the way it seems meant to it can be alienating Theres a film section in black and white that fails to fit with the other sequences ditto a scene where Teller Is accosted by thugs But the movies moments of carelessness and its quality dont destroy it at least not for hardcore fans It seems destined for cult status GRADE JOHNNY HANDSOME R At his best Walter Hill makes action movies with a real charge to them pictures like The Warriors and Shortlived sitcom was prehistoric ASK DICK KLEINER A Keynew is how tient who comes out of the bandages is indeed handsome Hes also in com plete disguise able to set up his for mer cohorts without their knowing who he is Unfortunately the movie settles for being little more than a lean mean machine The script goes for stupid contrivances as often as it tries for the offbeat or suggestive By the end the humorless tone and the spiky violence can get to you Yet the movie is almost worth see ing for a trio of performances Done up to look like a cross between the kid in Mask and Nick Nolle on a bad day Sometimes makes this impossible role work He has an espe
