160000 in Halton Region By ALAN Herald Special The Christmas Seals campaigr was officially kicked off today as the Lung Association major source of support This year it hopes to raise million in Canada 4 million in Ontario and ooo m Halton Specially designed Christmas Seals will be sent to 80 homes in Halton Hills Money raised by the campaign will go to programs set up for people with respiratory pro blems and medical research THE LUNG ASSOCIATION I Lungs a for lite One in five Canadians have respiratory problems caused by asthma chrome bronchitis em physema tuberculosis pneumonia or other various disorders according to the Lung Association Diseases of the respiratory system ranks third in the leading causes of death in Canada Almost 26 Canadians die each year as a result diseases including 200 people in Ontario the association says Asthma affects more than one million people in Canada Almost 57 hospital admissions are for treatment of asthma patients fore an estimated days of hospitalization each year Respiratory problems are the leading cause of absenteeism from work and school It is also the leading cause of hospitalization in children from birth to age 14 Funding for world class research is distributed through the Lung Association medical sec the Ontario Thoracic Society Almost 750 will be contributed from Ontario Two million dollars targeted nat to go to medical research programs across Canada The programs run by the Lung Association include better breathing clubs air force and the lungs are for life school program Countdown and cold turkey are the two better breathing clubs in Halton Countdown is designed to help smokers quit over the dura tion of six night sessions within one month and cold turkey is designed to help smokers quit over five night sessions in one week Elizabeth Porter executive director for the Lung Association said Ms Porter said the programs have a very good rate of sue cess The short term rate of sue cess is per cent and the long term rate is per cent The lower long term rate because some people quit only for a small of time Ms Porter said The programs are only effec live if you want to make it tive she added Air force is a new asthma pro gram introduced last year designed to help children and their parents learn how to deal with the condition Asthma is the most com mon chronic disease of childhood With proper medical care asthmatics can live comfortable and useful lives The lungs are for life school pro gram is a major effort by the organization to reach students and focus their attention on health children about the importance of good lung health Christmas Seals are not the only fundraiser for the Lung Associa tion A recent Kwan Doe pro gram in raised Ms Porter said Bmgos are a con tmuous fundraiser she added The mailing of Christmas Seals has been the largest fundraiser for the association since when it was decided the seals would be the official method of support for the Tuberculosis
