Page THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday November 18 1989 Canada prepares to host World Beaver Lumber in gear The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and the City of Ottawa are very busy preparing to host the first ever official International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF Women s World Championship main venue for this World Championship in this landmark event will be the Ottawa Owe Centre during the week of March to 25 with several other contests slated for surrounding communities of the nation s capital This inaugural Women s World Championship will feature the best women s hockey players worldwide with no age restrictions being applied Canada s National Women s Team will play host to Finland Sweden Norway Germany Switzerland Japan and the USA during this event The was prompted to act on the area of Women s Hockey as a result of the efforts made by the Ontario Women s Hockey Assocta tion two years ago when they successfully hosted an Invitational World Tournament whih included several European teams The decided to stage a European Cham pionship in Dusseldorf Germany last year to determine the actual degree of interest across Europe With all of the above mentioned European teams in attendance the European Championship turned into an overwhelming success and thus the IIHF felt that Women s hockey warranted a World Champ The format to be used will consist of two four country pools who will participate in a round robin schedule It was the pos finish from that init European Champ onsh earned the European National Teams the right to travel to Canada Pool A will feature Japan Sweden Germany and Canada wh le the B pool will see Norway Switzerland the USA and Finland competing against each other Although body checking is no longer being played in competitive Women s hockey in Canada it was decided at the Fall Meetings in Zurich Switzerland that it will be permitted at the World Championsh p level The other area of question concerned slapshots and this too has been adopted for the World s Championships This event will give women of all ages an opportunity to really appreciate as spectators and participants the skill level possible in women s ice hockey stated This fully sanctioned World Cham pionship event combined with the fact that Women s Hockey has been granted official status at the Canada Games in will provide tremend ous impetus and motivation for the many female youngsters who have already shown that they can enjoy hockey and play the game with every bit as much vigour and enthusiasm as do the boys across Canada After a big weekend at the Orangeville tournament coaches LaRose McLeod and Krause tuned up their Black Machines to meet Streetsville Tuesday in Georgetown Still running in high gear Georgetown took an early lead 2 Mighty Mike wasted no fuel when he skimmed one past Streetsville s goalie Eager Beaver Smith has showed us you must get better with age since celebrating his birthday a short while ago there s no stopping him He flipped into overdrive and went end to end to score the second goal Defence Grizzly Jeff Bahr and Joey Goodhew have really come up big lately when they were sent to guard the blueline they got the job goalie to watch from Georgetown Our goalie Joey Barber cheered tam males on from the bench wh le having a rest after playing three good games in Streetsville came back to tie Georgetown 3 but the Black Machines played a good game against last year County champions Richardson and Demolition Dave were tough to beat just missed a couple of times and Dave was tough along the boards Ace Robert fired the third goal in with a nice shot from in front Defence Jeff Telford stopped a lot of Orange and Black from getting away good shots Beaver Lumber Black Machines travelled to Milton Sun day Coaches Bodanis Bruins top Ancaster Brendan Alexa puts on show Brendan put on a oneman offensive display in leading Young s Pharmacy to an triumph over Crossway Donuts in a Georgetown Minor Hockey Association Novice House League game played last Saturday In other Novice House League contests Lions Club edged Kinsmen Club and and M Sports battled to a 33 tie with A and S Engraving Alexa scored four goals and add three assists to pace the Young Pharmacy attack Brian Normore and John Howell each notched hat tricks with Kris Noonan rounding out the winners scoring John Howell and Ian Murphy also had three assists in the game with Kris counting two assists and Ian adding a single helper There were only seven Crossway players on hand for the game and they all put in a good fort Roddy Heinz led the attack in the Lions Club win as he scored both goals Assists went to Nathan Mar tin Tristan Temple and Derrick Elliott For the Kinsmen Club team An drew scored the lone goal with J Travers assisting Adam McDonaud put in a fine fort in and Sports 33 tie with A and Engraving as he scored twice Bobby scored the other M and marker and assisted on both of McDonald s goals Bryan Foster also had two assists For A and S Engraving Geoff Tom Dales and Scott Schlegel were the marksmen Schlegel also picked up two assists Ronald DiHabough Andrew Boyle and Tom Dales also had assists Tor A and S Engraving The Georgetown Major Bruins played a home and away series with An caster this past week A very determined Ancaster team hosted the Major on Monday night and held our chargers to a 3 draw In fact it took a last minute goal from Duke on an assist by Matt Brain to earn the tie for the Bodanis Bruins Doug Sheppard opened the ing on a play that went from Jamie Stephensdn to Erler behind the net to Sheppard in the slot counted the other Georgetown goal as he took a Gavin Glaser pass behind the An caster net faked one way and came out the other side to tuck the puck in the open side John Waller again provided solid goaltending for the Major Peewees At Arena on Saturday the results were very different as the Bodanis Bruins overwhelmed a hapless side by a score of Sheppard continued his torrid scoring pace as he notched four goals Blaine McCauley Mark Aldndge Glaser and Stephen Onopnjenko each added a single marker Onopnjenko Erler and Jim Knts Tied two assists Single helpers went to Mc Cauley Brain Stephenson and Aldndge Chad Hughes recorded the shutout for Georgetown Sponsor Dan Bodanis was on hand to witness the fine effort and wished the team good luck in their upcoming and Mighty Mike Krause played a good game up front Gnzzly Jeff fired rubber from defence up to Ace LaRose and speedster Robert tucked It in Milton s net Just to be sure of it Speedster Robert stepped into again and beat Milton s goalie for his second goal of the game Defence Eager Beaver Ryan Smith and Jeff played strong along the blueline as well as creating action up front Tiger Jeff Telford and Moose Joey Goodhew had a few shots on net from the but really played hard along the and in front of our net to clear the puck Joey Barber was in net for the Black Machines he played an excellent game
