in the future As the new global economy emerges Ontario is going to have to adjust to measuring ourselves by world standards rather than tional or provincial standards We are going to be competing daily in a world marketplace that emphasises ideas as well as com modities As David Peterson in dicated at a recent conference on the competitiveness of the Cana economy our future success will probably have a great deal more to do with the knowledge bet ween our ears than the resources beneath our feet Our most valuable commodity is going to be our human resources As a province it is going to be our ability to handle education skills training and labor adjustment that will determine the success of our economy and ensure the maintenance of our present of living Education is going to become everyone s business Ontario s education system is already moving to meet the new challenges of the 90s We are renewing our curriculum and our teaching profession In the grades we are focusing on the basic tools of learning literacy numeracy and problem solving Classes will be smaller to help en sure that these crucial early years are effective and enjoyable In the middle and senior grades a new emphasis will be placed on science and technology in addition to the basic skills of reading writing and mathematics We already know that science technology and computers will play a larger role m the future We must ensure that today s students are able to deal with the new technology which will continue to shape our lives The colleges and universities of Ontario have become active par of
