Georgetown Newcomers Club families new to Hills the chance to mnke friends and socialize The club started years ago and club members think there are people out there who would be interested in the group activities if they knew about the club Etta DeAth and are only two of members who welcome anybody interested In joining the group Herald photo The Georgetown Newcomers Club is waiting with open arms to make families new to Halton Hills feel welcome The 10yearold group currently has a membership of 32 people which is down from the 50 members the club has had previous years And club member Etta Ath says the relatively low membership is due to new town residents being unaware of the group The group relies on the Georgetown Welcome Wagon and a notice on Cable Television to inform people about its ac tivities yet it s still hard to find out about families new to the area said Ms De The groups monthly meetings at St Andrew s United Church in Georgetown provides people with the opportunity to meet each other and socialize And after making friends people feel more dent about where they are living says another club member The club is primarily aimed at women says Ms The meetings centre around a guest speaker who is usually someone from the community Trudy Thomas of Up Up and Away Balloons spoke on different ideas of how to put on birthday parties at the clubs most recent meeting Jan Other speakers have in eluded a representative from the Crisis Centre who talked about volunteer work and another from the Halton Regional Police who spoke on the issue of drug awareness Those interested in joining the are invited over to a house of one of the members to share coffee with two or three members the Monday before the persons first meeting This way at the meeting the woman already knows some people Ms said Members are not obligated to at tend the meetings The club en courages unlimited membership to ensure that there is always a good number in attendance A newcomer membership lasts three years because by this time the members have established a social circle Ms De says The person then becomes an alumnus And this group holds a social tion once a month As well the group organizes events for the entire family This spring Ms Mckibbon says an outing to a Maple syrup is planned to see a sugaring off There is also the group annual family
