Catherine Vaters Herald photo Sports safety program Ministry developing guidelines will soon participate in safer sports fitness and recrea tion facilities with the assistance of new safety guidelines developed by the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Ken Black announced the Risk Management and Safety in Facilities Project a major in itiative designed to encourage safer sports practices and create safer facilities for participants With the high number of sports injuries the difficulty in obtaining adequate insurance coverage and past liability suits the Ministrys Safety Leadership Office recognizes the need to address these issues in amateur sport fitness and recreation activities throughout Ontario Mr Black said The result is the Risk Management and Safety in Facilities Project Under the direction of the com mittee a risk management con sulting firm will examine existing safety standards and design resource materials that can be us ed by sports organizations facility owners and operators to maintain a safe environment for all par ticipants This includes identifying safety risks inherent in each sport and determining ways to reduce these risks This program responds to the concern over the number and costs of injuries incurred in sport fitness and recreation activities The program has two main elements a Safety Leadership Of fice located in the Ministry to co ordinate a longterm safety strategy a Ministers Advisory Committee on Sport Fitness and Recreation Safety to assist and ad vise the Ministry on safetyrelated matters The Safety Program includes a variety of activities initiatives and projects in six areas Public Awareness Training and Educa tion Research and Development Risk Management and Safety Strategies Grants and Incentives and Coordination and Leadership The Public Awareness compo nent will create an informed and knowledgeable public concerning the issues of personal safety in par ticipation The program includes a public awareness and marketing campaign and a public informa tion centre at the Ontario Sports Centre Training and Education aims to educate sport fitness and recrea tion practitioners leaders and par ticipants in the areas of safety and injury prevention It includes educational and training booklets posters and programs Research and Development aims to develop policies and strategies that can enhance safe participation in sports It includes a data collection system to track and monitor the numbers and economic costs of injuries in the province as well as research pro
