Page THE HERALD Wednesday March 14 1990 BEST AVAILABLE COPY Winter Derringer combo is no trash Entertainment ByDIAHANNNADEAU Herald Special Edgar Winter and Rick Derr Inger also known as White Trash played a searing show at Club 2000 last week They gave a near capacity audience two solid hours worth of red hot rock and roll Their playing and singing was so intense they could have made the dead dance As it was the living were on their feet a lot of the time The band included Kevin Hupp on drums Charlie Torres on bass C P Roth on keyboards with Derr guitar and Edgar on sax synthesizer and drums This was a tight unit well practiced and featuring outstanding musicians Both men took turns singing their hits including Winter s Fly Away Free Ride and Frankens tein and Derringer s Rock and Roll Hootchie Teenage Love Affair and the marvelous Hang On Sloopy But it just a ride down memorv lane although their renditions of those songs were in spired Frankenstein included a from a song from Last Tango in Pans No the two performed several new works including Cry Out an environmentally oriented song from Winter s new album Mission Earth The proceeds from this song are being donated to the United Nations Environment Pro gram Other new songs have not vet been recorded but sounded fan tastic Rhapsody Red an in strumental started out as an in credibly ballad with Winter playing his sax to sweetly it was almost unbearable then moved in to a jazz inflected rocker Another new song was also a lovely ballad giving the show a balance between fast and slow One of the highlights to be Rick intro to a great favorite Sherman it s time to set the Way Back machine Where are we going Mr To to Ohio signalling the crowd to go wild Back in led the McCoys and their hit Hang On Sloopy nude it to the top of the charts The updated version kept all the best elements of the old one but with this band it had a harder rocking sound It was superb The encore was the bluesy Tobacco Road a long version with many solos seguing into the Brothers Shout A better finish could not have been possible After the show Winter and gave interviews Edgar is shy has the characteristic Albino appearance and was ob viously bothered by the lights He spoke in a soft Texas drawl about his last album Mission Earth which is based on a series of L Ron Hubbard novels The music could become a basis for a movie or a Broadway show I was attracted to the idea of putting the books to music He and Rick had been touring Japan and recorded a live album which has been releas ed there but he was unsure if it would be released in Canada Rick who has not grown any taller but is a little fatter was ob viously more at ease with the inter view process He and Edgar have been songs together in preparation for a studio alburn they plan to put out soon Rick is also working on a solo album He was to tour alone until Edgar called and suggested join ing him The current tour will last through September and will in clutie gigs in West Germany Scan and Australia During the tour Rick Hopes to squeeze some recording lime Good news at tax time TO 1 ir personal finance series is pre a special one hour income tax phone in show March at 8 00 Viewers throughout Oniano are invited to call the studio toll free with any questions they have about their 1 income tax forms Hosts Bruce Rogers and Christine Johnson will be joined by tax expert and author Evelyn Jacks and chartered account ant Together they will answer viewers questions and help clarify the new and more cated issues 1989 tax return Moi t regular Gor don will also offer some useful advice in his commentary Atoll freenumberwillappearon screen during this special one hour program Tax is just a phone calf away when you tune in to firth
