fast to ensure the proposed Great Lakes Science Centre is built in Halton or it will be built somewhere else said Regional Chairman Peter Pomeroy after members of the Regions planning and public works committee heard a staff presentation on the centre last Wednesday If construction went ahead which happen for five to 10 years said Chairman it would be built at the south end of the Burlington waterfront The centre is a good idea because it addresses the whole issue of the environment said the chairman As Regional chairman it will be Mr Pomeroy s job to generate support for the idea and participate in the selection of a board of directors The board would consist of members from both the public and private sectors and the scientific community The centre would act as a focal point for research into en Vironmental issues in general and water quality issues particularly around the Great Lakes Regional planner Dave McCleary told com members The centre would also provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the various types of en vironmental research being con ducted by the scientific communi he said Currently a gap exists between the two groups Air told councillors The centre is being called inter national in scope A report resulting from a Regional staff study done last year on the idea of a centre says the Great Lakes is of global interest and the Great Lakes Centre would attract inter national attention because of its specific circumstance with global implications and significance The report proposes the Region would pay per cent or just over million of the centre million construction cost The re mainder would be split between the federal and provincial govern meats the private sector and in If the Greater Toronto Area ever flies Chairman Pomeroy said the portion of money it would collect from waste disposal could help finance some of the centres research projects The Region has already paid of the needed for the study on the idea of the centre But to is currently needed in seed money to keep the idea alive said Mr McCleary And he suggested the money is needed relatively soon so the Region can ride the crest of public and government interest in the en vironment Mr McCleary said it has yet to be determined who would provide the money But Regional staff plans to make a presentation next month before the Royal Commis sion on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront he said Parade will wind through Glen Williams The Glen Williams Canada Day parade is set for Sunday July 1 1990 The parade will commence at the parking lot across from Preston store at approx noon and wind through the hamlet ending at United Church on Main Street in the Glen Town councillors gave their ap proval of the parade at Monday nights general committee meeting on the condition that Halton Regional Police do the same Police will beneeded to escort the parade and to provide crowd con trol at the intersections of Con federation Street and Road and Mam objectives to make Canada more com petitive and to improve the fairness of the tax system for all Canadians The plan includes a new credit to offset part or all of the tax for lower or modest income households To find out if you qualify fill out the green form that comes with your 1989 tax package Even if you dont have to pay income tax it s important that you send in the green form If you
