ISM Group wonts a town art and history museum John Sommer IDEAS AND THE ARTS To somebody who came to Georgetown in this town has changed and grown beyond recognition Not all the changes have been improvements On the long stretch from Maple Avenue to the Georgetown Motor Inn all the plans large and small with their Individual parking lots in front are architecturally hideous One of the wonders of our age is that all these dreadful buildings were designed by people with university degrees whereas the wellproportioned old buildings In town were designed by small town and village masons and carpenters How come I have no explanation for it The only things worth a glance along this shopping highway are the towering signs I wish they were even bigger and more attention- grabbing They are after all a kind of public sculpture Old Georgetown of course is much nicer now than 30 years ago You can feel walking through the old town that people are finally proud of their heritage of the old stores and Victorian churches and the fine old homes in the Park District and near the Station They are restoring them and adding to them They treat them as heirlooms Which makes me think that the time has arrived to plan a museum We are having an archive filled with artifacts documenting the past of our town from photographs to maps and newspaper clippings to letters and diaries All these things that by design or accident outlast time and eventually become such priceless witnesses for past manners and fashions On top of this we have many art works of quality that have been donated to us and it looks as if we might get a lot more of them before the year The town will also have many more inhabitants according to the designs of the planning board that were published recently in the local press Keeping all this in mind wouldnt it be a splendid thing to make a Halton Hills History and Art Museum our community pro ject for the year I remember the opening of the Hills Library and Cultural Centre almost nine years ago Quite a few people the expense of that building at the time Yet today we all know that the opening of that building marked a turning point in Georgetowns history The arts are here to stay now artists have mov ed to our town since the centre opened tourists have discovered Kills and are spending their dollars here Think of what a drawing card a Hills history and art museum could be a museum that natives and visitors alike could en joy and be proud of We could get from other museums exhibitions that we can not have now because our present facilities are not up to museum standards Every time we had a special exhibition in this museum people would come to Georgetown to see it and go home to sing the praises of this gracious and civilized community If you like the idea of a Halton Hills history and art museum join The Friends of the Halton Hills at the gala opening of the exhibition Hidden Bounty at the gallery of the Cultural Centre Georgetown on April 1 at 2 to 30 p m The Friends of the Hills Libraries are looking for many new members to help them in their attempt to make a proper museum in this town a reality This is a major project that that have been bought by the Georgetown Library Board or been given to the board by private collectors and artists This hoard is hidden now The ex makes an attempt to show at least a few of these
