management John Mackay describe how the blue box program in the urban area has expanded to include a lot of the Region rural area and apartment buildings The Region has also established several pilot backyard composting programs said Mr Mackay Mr Mackay said the Regions recycling program has been a sue cess and he predicted it would con tmue to succeed But he said Halton is concerned that the amount of waste being produced In the Region has increased over the years The Region has to better educate people about the of the three recyling principles he told the audience Reduction is first re use is second and recycling is third Peel coordinator of industrial waste management Jane Rowbotham told the audience that since the majority of garbage pro duced in Peel ts produced by the commercial and industnal sector it has concentrated its efforts in that area Peel has been able to divert 00 per cent of old tires and 88 per cent of old cardboard from its landfill during the last few years The Region is also establishing a wood recycling plant and effective May 1 Peel will ban dry wall from its dump said Ms The successful diversion of com mercial and industnal waste could not have happened without the Region promoting markets for their recycled materials she said To handle the increased amount of which will appear on the market at the beginning of next month Ms Bowbotham said the Region encouraged a Vancouver based dry wall recycling company to set up a plant in Oakville Mr Mackay said the Region Is only starting to get into the ing of industnal and commercial waste And he expects Halton to follow Peels lead and ban drywall from its landfill in the near future Mr speculated other long term related recycling pro grams could include the recycling of appliances and some sort of in cineration type program such as energy from waste residents could also be faced with a charge per bag of gar left on the curbside said Mr Mackay And he would like to see the seller take more responsibility for hazardous waste products It costs a person for a can of paint and it costs the Region twice that to dispose of the can he said Paint stores should be encouraged to take back the
