hockey season in rousing fashion over the weekend by capturing the championship silverware at the Richmond Hill Atom Select Hockey Tournament staged at Bond Lake The oneday tournament tested as well as talent and the Lakeview centre came out on top on both counts In the team first game at noon the crew downed Nobleton 2 with Acton Robert being selected the game Most Valuable Player centre next tok to the ice at and defeated Wood bridge with Jason Pembleton getting the nod as the game Most Valuable Player In the championship match played at 7 30 m Saturday even ing Lakeview Centre nipped East Gwillimbury 2 1 to emerge as tour champions with Scott Mac Donald Most Valuable Player honors in the championship triumph In their tournament opener against Nobleton the Acton crew got off to a slow start but then opened up a 31 twoperiod lead to the 2 triumph Matthew Boycot and Aaron For rest each scored twice for Acton with Chris Williams Jason Pembleton and David Clark ad ding singles Matthew Boycott and Jason Pembleton also contributed two assists apiece to the winning effort Against Lakeview Centre never really let the get into the game and opened lead before hit Acton 31 over the balance of the game but the early Centre surge Junior curlers finish season By BRAD BURGESS Herald Saturday two North Curling dub Junior Teams com peted in a Junior Bonpiel in Brampton sponsored by quip Ltd Both teams won one game and lost two against some very experienced curlers Team l was skipped by Robbie Wands with Tim at vice Terah Santos at second and Kevin Spears at lead Wands lost his first game to Chinguacousy but came back strongly in the se cond game against East York with a 73 victory In the final game of the day Wands team ran out of gas against a very experienced High Park club and lost Team was skipped by Bayko with Paul Burgess at vice Sharon at second and Kel ly Sommervilie playing lead The Bayko had trouble ad justing to the very fast ice condi in the first game against Richmond Hill and lost In the second game a steal of three points in the third end was too much to recover from and the Bayko rink lost 73 to Brampton In the third game the team played very well and defeated the East York team There were rinks competing in the Bonspiel which attracted teams from Toronto and Peel Regions AH curlers received prizes for their efforts were treated royally by the host Brampton dub The North Halton Curling Club Juniors held their closing party and awards presentation on Sun day at the club Prizes for the last round of curl were presented with Paul Burgess edging out Brett Cormier for first place after both haa tied with identical points Third prize went to Robbie Wands Deanne Bayko was fourth and Sharon Shapcott was fifth Winners of the first round of curl held up to Christmas were Rob bie Wands in first place Sharon Shapcott took second Bayko in third and Tim took fourth Attendance awards were given to Robbie Wands and Sharon Shap cott for achieving almost perfect attendance The Juniors decided to hold more bonspiels next year attend more out of town and en courage others to join A junior executive will be form ed to help plan next years program and a greater effort will be made to get more participation at the high school team level was to salt away the win Steven White and Jason each scored twice with Ryan rounding out the scor Trevor Malloy had a pair of assists in the win over with single helpers going to Steven White Brad Ryan Seads and Adam DaPonte The championship clutching win over East Gwillimbury was a nail biter throughout as Lakeview trc scored two first period markers then held on to claim the 2 1 triumph Aaron Forrest on passes from Bradley Williams and Scott Mac Donald opened the scoring for Ac ton with Jason Pembleton notching the winner after converting a pass from Matthew Boycott Robert was in goal for all three Lakeview games The team expressed a special thanks to their sponsor Lakeview Centre and thanks to all the parents for their support especial ly Debbie Rhynold who acted as team mascot The players were lauded for their conduct sportsmanship and effort in capping off the 198990 Pharmacy completed their undefeated season with a vie April to capture the cham pionship The championship was a fan tastic game featuring Youngs Pharmacy against Lions Club with Young the favorite Both teams had great scoring chances but the solid defense and great goaltending by Tommy Allen and Dylan Lee kept the game scoreless With five minutes left in the third period Lions Clubs Brian Nor more broke the jce with a goal past Dylan Lee As Youngs desperately pulled their goalie with a minute left look to tie the score Brendan Alexa scored with seconds left on the clock forcing the game into over time It would be six minute periods until someone scored Finally n the overtime Young defenseman Ian Cartwrtght ended the drama with an end to end rush and scored lifting Young Pharmacy to vie claiming the Novice Division Championship 2 1 over Lions Club Both Lions Club and Young s Pharmacy thrilled the huge crowd with great hockey and it was a shame someone had to lose After the game the league awards were given out Youngs Brendan Alexa cap tured most valuable player most improved went to Kinsmen Ryan Carter most sportsmanlike player went to Lions Club Andrew and Youngs Dylan Lee won the Vezina Young s Pharmacy completed their undefeated season with a record They ended with goals for and only 24 goals against The team was led by league MVP Brendan who finish ed the season 1
