third in economic dynamism and absence of state intervention Where Canada falls down is in financial dynamism and in paying too much attention to the domestic market The and the lowering of trade barriers in Europe may force Canadian firms to further ex pand their horizons When that expansion comes it is comforting to know that most manufacturers are likely to cope On another subject I erred In writing last week that Canada Day celebrations will cost million this year The figure in the Secretary of States spending estimates for this year is million which is down from million four years ago However the point being made was that programs vital to native people were being cut while ceremony was being left alone The State Ceremonial and Cana dian Identity program which in cludes Canada Day royal visits and participation in exhibitions and fairs will get nearly million this year up from million in the fiscal year an increase of per cent The departments native citizens programs including the terminated native press subsidy will get million down from 539 million last year a drop of 18 percent Spending on the departments womens program falls 14 per cent to million and that for the disabled remains flat at 32 minion which is a drop of nearly 1 Georgetown did figure skaters proud Dear Editor On March 3031 the Georgetown Figure Skating Club cohosted the Ontario Juvenile preciation to the Region of Halton Public Works Department On Saturday evening March 24 our sewer system blocked up causing raw sewage to overflow in to our basement A call to the public works department yielded a response within minutes Pat Woods and his coworker whose name I did not learn work ed diligently to clear the blockage Unfortunately our house being older caused the job to be more complicated than it initially ap peared leaving Mr Woods in a position where he was unable to help He recommended a gentleman who could help us out called him and set up an appoint ment for the next day at 9 30am Promptly they both arrived at and started to work As it turn ed out the problem was on our side Commissioners spending will be remembered Dear Sir Onllia plans to light up its nights with energy from waste Torontos waste Hydro predicts brownouts even rotating blackouts if our love affair with plug in technology continues Nuclear power plants make us vous but the fellowship We here in New Glasgow would like to see everyone return home for this event but we know that will not be possible however we are an ticipating a good response For more information they may write or call the undersigned Ms Joanne States Chairperson of Publicity 358 Vale Road New Glasgow Nova Scotia B2H4W8 To be men or not to be Okay Darn this being a family newspaper the torpedoes Im go ing to say something critical of feminism No wait Lets rephrase that Im going to call into mild question something that was recently done in the name of promoting equality between the sexes There A guy has to be careful when he discusses feminism To paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt walk softly cause theyre carry ing big sticks In any case all of this concerns a recent communication from MediaWatch which describes itself as a national feminist organization committed to improv ing the status and portrayal of women in the media This was a letter to the editor of a newspaper advising him that an analysis of one of his recent issues turned up at least six glaring ex amples of sexist language Dont worry it wasnt this newspaper Everyone around here is off the hook At least for the Anyway the letter brought a tru ly heretical thought to mind la it possible that organizations like occasionally go just a teensy eensy bit Granted sexist language is a problem We all agree for in stance that no one named Hilda should ever be called a spokesman Except in cases where Hilda is actually a Bruce who simply likes to wear lacy frilly things Which sometimes happens times being what they are All the same its possible to get carried awav MediaWatch for Instance up braided the editor for allowing the words fishermen longshoremen and firemen to sink into his paper Fair enough to a point except that firemen as the letter ad mitted was part of a direct quote This poses a problem for a reporter If Mr Smith says Something about firemen you cant really quote him as saying Something about firefighters instead At best I suppose you can quote him correctly and then add an editorial comment which will put him in his place like say Something about firemen said Mr Smith a sexist pig if ever there was one The other three examples were even more intriguing One con cerned the use of that vile word mankind I have a problem with this Ill concede grudgingly that the use of man to refer to humanity lhupersorthy as a whole has a sextet whiff But it also has a venerable tradition and an im pressive ring to it Wouldnt an anthropologist sound slightly silly delivering a paper on the cranial structure of Neanderthal Person Would The Shadow have become a classic of radio drama if each episode had opened with the announcers dark intonation Who knows what evd may lurk in the hearts of per sons On the other hand you cant quibble with MediaWatchs fifth glaring example which was the sentence S Army Captain Linda Bray commanded a 30man platoon in an attack Quite true If Linda Bray com it it wasnt a 30man pla toon And hey Linda must be quite a gal Oh my That just slipped out But the sixth example was startl ing MediaWatch objects to the sentence During negotiations gunmen asked their hostages if they were hungry or thirsty In stead the letter admonished the neutral word gunners should have been used Im still grappling with the logic here Apparently society will never be truly healthy until little girls are reassured that they have just as much right as boys to grow up to be hostagetakers There comes a point at which youre sorely tempted to shake your bead in and sigh Oh boy But being an sort you wont yield to this ten Youll sign Oh biped instead
