recognized sport of baton twirling Hard on the heels of winning the Junior Women s freestyle gold medal at the Ontario Baton Twirl ing Championships held recently Deanna swamped the competition at the Eastern Canadian Baton Twirling Championships held at Toronto s Humber College on the weekend by winning individual gold medals in Solo TwoBaton and Freestyle In other individual competition Deanna placed second Medley and third in Solo Dance The 14yearold a member of the Georgetown located Kings Baton East competitive baton twirling club then joined her teammates and was a member of gold medal winning teams in the CBTF event and the World Team Competition event Another Georgetown member of the Kings Baton East Club 12 yearold Andrea Chisholm also joined in the golden harvest as a member of the gold medal winning Junior Dance team The next hurdle to be conquered on the road to the world stage for the two youthful Georgetown baton twirlers is the Canadian Baton Twirling Championships which will be staged in Montreal the first week of July The Canadian International Baton Twirling team will be selected following the Canadian Championships to challenge in the World Baton Twirling Champion ships which will be held m San An tonio Texas in August Rebels advance down route to provincial championships By IN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor Georgetown District High School Rebels track and field athletes are taking dead aim at provincial honors but are finding hive to battle the elements as well as the competition The walked away with the team s second consecutive Halton Distnct championship last week and qualified in 51 events for the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Con track and field champion ship the next step on the all Ontario route The GHAC competition was scheduled for last Thursday at University in Hamilton but the horrendous weather condi tions that prevailed caused some events the senior boys 3 metre event and a number of relay events to be rescheduled for yesterday Tuesday Unfortunately the regional track and field championship the final qualifier for OFSSA is scheduled for tomorrow Thurs day also at University in Hamilton so the Rebels training schedule has been thrown somewhat out of kilter The Rebels have qualified in 31 events for the regional championships and GDHS coach Bevin Clark is looking for possibly eight or nine more GDHS athletes to advance from day s GHAC rapup session At press time Tuesday final GHAC results were not available The provincial high school track and field championships will take place June 1 and 2 at University in Sudbury Only the top four individuals and relay teams will advance from the regional championships to challenge in the all Ontario meet Rebels who have already qualified for the regional cham pionships and
