Paget THE HERALD Wednesday Julys ltM LETTERS- Acton minor hockey volunteers are congratulated Dear Sir On July 1990 the Herald published a letter under the heading Acton Minor Hockey called into question The writer Mrs Spingola of Erin expressed her opinion that the reason that enrolment in minor hockey was declining was the youngsters were losing their enthusiasm for the game due to the carelessness of the adults who are supposed to be their role models I certainly agree that adults are a major reason for kids staying from hockey but I would not join Mrs Spingola in pointing the finger at the volunteers who put countless hours into the of the sport and who deserve as much recognition and thanks as we can give them Unfortunately I feel that it is too often parents like Mrs Spingola who establish an at mosphere for their children which almost guarantees that they will lose their love for hockey and maybe for sport in general Participation in sports gives young people a tremendous op portunity to learn about the co operation of team play about the benefits of practice and effort about winning with grace and los ing with honour and about enjoy ing the game for the sake of play the game Our contribution as parents Explanation requested on residential tax bill Dear Sir A short time ago I called into our new Town Hall to pay my residential tax bill and to ask for a short explanation why this bill in these times when we are all being asked to show restraint give more ask for less and settle for per cent wage increases etc has increas ed 62 per cent The ladj behind the desk was very pleasant while she was me that was wrong and pro ceeded to explain it was ONLY at 7 per cent increase She along with manv others have of course been brilliantly brainwashed into believing this to be the truth just the same wav others were brain washed into believing this monstrosity we now call our Town Hall complete with its all glass mile high cafeteria area No town sew age stem and No town water system was essential to the deelopment of the Town of Halton Hills This kind lady behind the desk proceeded to show me the booklet provided to all taxpayers which I had already read and cast aside as a load of bunkum This booklet shows we pay per cent in crease in taxes vs However i fails to show July 1990 to 1991 Julv to July the increase remains a whop ping 27 62 per cent If a person is paid 100 per week and on July 1st is given a raise this is a per cent in crease It is not spread over the prewous week to make or a per cent I request a full explanation in lavman terms not political or local council whitewash as to taxes have in fact increased 27 62 per cent from 00 per quarter to per quarter The schools don appear to be turning out better students The roads are still not all repaired a few hae been patch ed as have the sidewalks The major expenditure I can see that has driven all our taxes up 27 62 per cent is the Ego Trip on the Hill off Maple Ave Council PS But I do like the introduction to New Math Alan Dean Georgetown Editorial protested Dear Sir As chairperson of Residents Agamst Indiscriminate Destruction and Development I really must protest your editonal of July nth In this you painted members of our group as irrational radicals who would tar yellow ribbon and run people out of town on log cabins You then admit that this image is too far fetched It is more than far fetched it is un true We are a group of concerned citizens who oppose developments like the proposed Maple Avenue condos for this reason We love our town and care about the impact some developments will have on our community RAIDD is not anti development We stand for careful and well planned development that will enhance Georgetown not change it for the worse Your editorial also states that town councillors are being pum melled by both sides and this is fair The premise seems to be that in a democracy we elect representatives to be our voice and should quietly let them do their job However to do their job they must know how their public feels We are not trying to pummel our councillors only to let them know how strongly we feel This after all is also part of democracv Sincerely Roy Chairperson should be to reinforce these things to help make the game fun and to help them keep sport in perspec We do not do this by stressing individual achievements instead of those of the team by placing pressure on kids to be stars by keeping track of every point and paying for these by putting money into a trust fund and by complain when awards are not given to the right people OPEN MonSat 96 Fridays 99 MAIN STREET SUSSMANS FAMOUS PRICE SALE SAVE TO U OFF OUR ENTIRE SELECTION OF SPRING SUMMER MERCHANDISE FROM famous names such as Simon Chang Jones New York Mr Jax Royal Robbins Ralph Lauren Mister Leonard Looks and many many more I congratulate the volunteers in Acton for their work with minor hockey and all minor sports I think that it would be great if they all got trophies I think that every kid in the league should get a trophy as well and that they should all be the same whether the player scored goals or no goals at all Sincerely Don Payne Acton Mill rate escalation a cause of concern Dear Sir Along with other citizens of our town I wish to add my name to those who are very concerned with the everescalating increase in our mill rate Supposedly worthwhile and seeming irreversible reasons are plentiful for the increase Never a chief executive officer or group of trustees that would ap prove an increase in controllable expenditures of approximately times the current rate of inflation would surely be brought to task Has not the time come to say No S A Kruger Georgetown teamed Heart to Heart by Trisha
