THE HERALD Wednesday September 5 19K- Page win lose DREW Rick Landry stands beside his bicycle just before starting the IS km time trial held by the Brampton Cycle Club Landry has been cycling swimming and running steadily for a year now so he can participate in triathalon competitions Herald photo Cyclist competes for fun By GARRY J MURDOCH The Herald Georgetown cycle enthusiasts had their chance to test their en durance last Thursday night when the Brampton Cycle Club held a time trial on the outskirts of Georgetown A time trial takes or so cyclists and sets them on a course over various roads each starting one minute after the other This time trial was km long Rick Landry a former Georgetown resident who now lives and works in Brampton as a high school teacher feels it is a race that is designed to be fun He cycles although his mam goal is to continue to compete in tnathalons which involve running and swimming He decided to go into the sport a year ago after having coached run for 15 years and having had competed in swimming when he was younger It was all a matter of getting back into practice in the water and spending time working on the other two sports Landry also feels it is a good way to keep in shape Landry ended up beating his old score foi a 15 km cycle coming in under 30 minutes He felt that made the worthwhile but he let it go to his head Just be realistic he says and one can tell he isn t m it for any glory Have a good time What else are you going to do it for Naturalists to meet Halton Field Naturalists will be holding their first meeting of the year Sept 11 at Harrison Public School in Georgetown Guest speaker for the evening is Marion Streiberg staff en vironmentalist for the Ms Steiberg presentation topic will be Forests For Tomorrow Up date Hills hunters may find sport threatened Hunters in Hills may be facing increasing gun licensing costs and may find it difficult to continue their sport if new legisla is passed The bill introduced in the Houst of Commons by Justice Minister Kim Campbell puts undue burden on law abuding citizens and responsible firearm owners in another attempt by the Mulroney government to please public These were the comments ex pressed by Patrick Courtemanche Executive Director of the Shooting Federation of Canada Mr Courtemanche also outlined that Mrs Campbell is living in a fan tasy world if she believes that any of the measures proposed in the Tory bill will reduce accidental and criminal misuse of firearms or keep guns out of the hands of dangerous persons None of the proposals in that bill stand on firm ground as far as crime and accident reduction is concerned All of the proposals are a futile attempt to reassure the public without any regard for the and responsible recrea tional shooters hunters and com target shooter The measures contained in the bill would make it unreasonably difficult for a shooter to obtain the permits and acquire the equipment he or she needs to practice the sport or hunt Considerable in creases in fees for Firearm Ac quisttion Certificates and training courses will create a burden that could potentially discourage sport and sportswomen to get into the sport of competitive shooting or hunting The Shooting Federation of Canada represents over 23 members and 350 shooting clubs across Canada It intends to mobilize all it s present member ship as well as to recruit new members in it s fight against this bill We are very disappointed the reactionary legislative measure initiated by Mrs Campbell She viouslv has no grip on that issue and a very poor understanding of the reality of firearm ownership and use in Canada The Legislative Committee of the Shooting Federation of Canada will review the bill closely and pro vide evidence that most of its recommendations are unreasonable and that instead more financial resources should have been used to apply legislation presently in force in Canada that combined with stricter sentencing for individuals who commit a criminal offence with a firearm How to be a Local Hero Imagine a Canada where people make giving an important part of their lives Where they I make time in their busy day to think about how much they can really give in time and in money Where they dont wait to be asked to help Imagine the rewards of bang one of those a Recreation Parks FALL AQUATIC REGISTRATION 1 Class
