test for loss of consciousness University of Toronto resear chers have developed a test that identifies people who lose con as a result of fainting This test confirms or eliminates fainting as the reason for a loss of consciousness said Dr Menashe a ear the Department of Medicine if the reason is not fainting then other causes such as epileptic seizure severe rhythm of the heart and narrowed heart valves can be investigated The test involves the tion of Isoproterenol a synthetic form of Adrenaline intravenously while the subject is a passive upright position at 60 degrees Peo ple who are prone to fainting will lose consciousness after being given Isoproterenol while in who have other disorders will usually not faint under these conditions Dr said the exact reason for the fainting reaction in duced by Isoproterenol is not known but it is thought to be a result of a false signal sensed within the heart in response to the combination of Isoproterenol and upright tilting This false signal is believed to be a greatly increased pressure within the cavity of the heart which causes the involuntary ner system to switch off This in leads to a reduction in heart rate a fall in blood pressure and ultimately a fainting reaction Dr tested people aged to 74 who had a history of loss of consciousness The sub jects whose previous episodes were consistent with a fainting reaction described the following conditions They occurred while the sub ject was upright or standing They were preceded by weakness sweating warmth nausea and visual dimming They were induced by sant fnghtemng anxiety filled or painful events Consciousness resumed within seconds of reclining and full recovery was within one to five minutes In the study 16 of subjects developed a fainting reaction to the while it is nice to forget the sup posed and allow just some thought Do you ever look into the eyes of something young and absolute Living on a farm gives me ample opportunity to do just that every day It could be the eyes of the newborn calves and foals or metaphorically the newness of the sprouting crops the clear water from the melting snow We see hope when we farm and for many it is the reason we continue to do so even when the times economics dictate we should not The hope is in the planting the nutunng and the harvest whether it is crop or livestock Our new hope Whenever we are troubled we can all be inspired by hope And whether you are i or a countryside dweller it is there in the eyes our babies our new our hope Mam Slreot South Downtown Georgetown 8731470 Wetlmake it
