Page 10 THE HERALD Wednesday October -Letters- POWERcontinues fight To the Editor Helpt POWER has recently come across a number of Halton Hills residents who believe that the landfill proposal for the Acton Quarry has been withdrawn With the disruption that this pro posal could cause for our com we wish that the private company Reclamation Systems Inc would realize that this is the wrong site for their investment plants However RSI is steaming ahead Sadly the fight is not over why the confusion Once Region had dead ed on the Milton site for its gar bage perhaps residents not knowing our quarry was a private proposal felt the Acton site was off the hook Or when POWER and others quickly opposed the plan to put garbage in the Quarry and saw that proposal withdrawn perhaps residents confused the two sites Or perhaps when residents read that the Niagara Escarp ment Commission had voted unanimously for Amendment 52 they thought the fight was over This is the amendment that would remove waste disposal or management from a list of utilities permitted in the escarp ment Unfortunately that vote was just the beginning of the pro cess Next comes a hearing at a on Dec 3rd at Halton Hills Civic Center There will be op position who want garbage in the escarpment Opposition who see bucks in garbage disposal All those who love the escarp ment should make every effort to attend After the hearing the amend goes back to the and then on to cabinet so it is nol a sure thing Also this amend once passed may not apply to the Acton Quarry The safety of your water cannot be guaranteed if RSI gets a license to bring garbage from outside our region to fill the Acton Quarry We know that all land fills leak We know that aquifers carrying groundwater once polluted can never be returned to their original state You might expect to be able to move away from contaminated water but we worry that presently depressed property values would be further depressed by this news If tional trucks clog our roads and sea gulls take up residence who will want to buy POWER is still fighting We continue to need your support at events like our October Halloween Dance Remember to renew your POWER member ship to attend our general meeting tonight at Limehouse School and to be at our annual meeting on November 28th We need you You need us fighting for your interests Yours truly Barbara Halsall
