Sabres lose and win in weekend action By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor The Acton Sabres split their games on the weekend losing in Godench 7 3 Friday and winning at home Erin Sunday 83 over Fergus Sabre coach Ken said his team s play Friday could have been better especially the ear ly stages of the match We were tied after one period and we were all over them in the second but just couldn t score We outplayed them but they got the only goal After that said Steen the third period went all Godench s way scoring four goals to just one for the Sabres Two bright spots the game were the continued scoring pro duction of Jeff Shevalier who leads all Acton players in points and former Georgetown Jr B player Jim English netted two goals while English got one Shevalier was also involved in some other good news for the Sabres having been chosen to the Call star team Tuesday All the coaches get together every year and pick a line from their team which are then voted on Three players from each team are chosen This years Acton tatives are Shevalier Matt Markou and assistant captain Mark Broomersma The team will play against the Jr Owen Sound team Friday Sunday the Sabres were technically playing a home game but it took place m Erin one of two games designed to develop more interest in the team from the surrounding area We didn t have a bad crowd there were quite a few people there to see us We played well with all four lines contributing so it was nice to show the crowd a win said Steen The coach said the victory was an important one for the team since they want to keep pace with the teams ahead of them in the standings Bradford is four points ahead of fifthplace Sabres but the Acton team has three games In hand and is continuing to score Jim English played hosting their first ever tournament he Construction Atoms are hosting an Atom tournament on Dec 28 The tournament will in volve seven other teams Bowling tournament Acton Lanes will be the site of the Volleyball tournament for local feeder schools The schools participating eluded St Peter Holy Rosary Our Ijdy of Victory St Joseph s Holy Cross St Francis of Assist Both the girls and boys par ticipated in round robin action with the top three teams of both pools advancing to the semi finals In girls action Our of Victory St rancis and St Joes battled it out St Francis knocked out St Joe s to meet Our of Victory in the championship game After two tough and close games St Francis came out I ahead to win This would mark the fourth year in a row St Francis has the girls title In boys action the top three teams also advanced to the semi finals With Holy Cross placing first in the round and receiving a bye to the finals Our Lady of Victory and St Peter s remained Our Lady of Victory The play of the Georgetown Raiders this weekend has got its coach wondering if some of his players have twin brothers who can play nearly as well Friday the Raiders defeated Burlington on the road and then returned home Saturday losing 12 2 to Brampton which has coach Gary shak his head I can t figure out how we can play a good intense game one night and then turn around and get blown away the very next day said the two games contrasted wildly from each other saw every player picking up their assignments and digging for the puck while the Brampton scorers had their way with Georgetown on Saturday The Burlington game was a real character builder We came back from 30 after the first period tied it with 10 minutes left in the third and then won it with six minutes remaining Saturday there was a lack of just about everything The coach said he was en by the strong play a few individuals such as Charles Officer who scored the winner on Friday and John Williamson who has worked hard since he joined the team Officer got the last two goals for us on Friday which was good because he been having trouble putting the puck in the net Williamson has given a consis effort in the last games 100 per cent every time he s out there Blair Catherwood also had a good weekend scoring a goal in each of the two games Lewis netted one in game while Bill McDonald got one in the shootout Saturday This week is an important one for us since we play last place Peterborough twice yesterday and Saturday and on Friday We ve had three wins in our last five games and if we can win this week along The Sunny Acre Farms Major Midgets and a team from Milton got into some slick swinging daring their game at Alcott Arena Saturday One Milton player who was ejected from the game was given a road The team lost 7439 at Bishop Reding a defeat they are looking to forget when they meet M M Robinson at today star ting at The junior team had things go their way in an exhibition match against Meadowvale Secondary School at GDHS on Monday The juniors defeated the visitors Meadowvale trailed for most of the game allowing the Rebels to coast through the las half of the match for the victory Both teams will be involved in tournaments The seniors will play at Port Credit while the juniors travel to Pearson The volleyball teams open then- season at Acton High School on Monday starting at 3 m and will play their first home game next Wednesday against Milton On Dec the seniors will host their own tournament The swim team is looking to continue their winning ways this afternoon when they host Oakville Trafalgar in a meet at the Georgetown Indoor Pool The Rebels won almost all of their races last week against Acton and Aldershot The Novice team travels to White Oaks on Thurs day in a meet that begins at pm
