Page 10 THE HERALD Wednesday January Peoples Forum- s Yuppy thirst causing breakdown of family unit leEditor plans for a fourth this is one topic Reasons most commonly ven make your own baby food or putting a little less To the Editor The Yuppy Thirst For the Mighty Dollar is causing a breakdown of the family unit During this past festive season we have had the occasion of sit ting down with friends and relatives and discussed over din current topics which are making headlines world over One of these topics happens to be children and the cost of raising them Being a family man v two children a third on the way and plans for a fourth this is one topic that is close to my heart It would appear that todays up wardly mobile couple in their quest for a career the large ex home expensive im ported auto and designer labeled wardrobe is willing to make whatever is necessary to attain these material objec lives but mention the word children and umpteen different reasons are given as to why they should not have any or only have one Roads complaint Editor note The following letter was released to the Halton HUIb Herald for publication Dear Mr Miller Upon awakening Dec 24th to a cover of beautiful white snow I did not look forward to my trip to Georgetown knowing ahead of time what the road conditions would be like I have lived in Terra Cotta and paid taxes to Halton for 15 years and each year when winter ar rives I ask myself the same tion How can the Region of Peel keep their roads cleared and sanded to bare pavement and Halton Hills can At 10 am on Dec 24th Winston Churchill iservic ed by Peel was cleared to wet bare pavement When I turned on to Sideroad I was greeted with the usual sight The road had been plowed sometime however there was no evidence of salt or sand The entire road was packed solidly with icy snow from all the cars travelling on this main route to Georgetown These road conditions continued through Glen Williams until I reached the hill at where guess what there was bare pave ment 1 I would think that because of the serious accidents on this stretch of road in less than a week Dec 22 Sideroad and 10th Line 1 person killed Dec 21 headon accident on the hill bet ween Line and Winston chill that there would have been some extra effort to get the to this section of road as quickly as possible Understandably In severe weather the main roads must be cleared first However on a very regular basis the day after a storm 22nd Sideroad is still an icy mess with a trail of 2 tire tracks that you must follow as you try to safely reach Georgetown Improved plowing and especially sanding is a must for 22nd Sideroad from Glen Williams to Winston Churchill Blvd Are more accidents necessary before years of on unsanded roads can end If Peel can keep their roads in excellent condition why can Halton Hills Yours truly Mrs R Hunter Terra Cotta High rise safety Dear Mr Editor I wish to comment on statements made by Mr John Sommer Points worth ponder ing Dec regarding safety in high nse apartments It should be noted that in the event of a fire in a high rise building the elevators are not to be used as a method of escape The elevator shaft becomes a passage for smoke and toxic gases and as a result the passengers of the elevator could be overcome It should also be noted that the stairwells of high nse buildings are protected by fire doors that should be kept closed at all times to prevent the spread of smoke into those stairwells In the event of a power failure a back up generator is utilized to provide power to emergency systems It is important to realize that high rise buildings are equipped with fire protection equipment which may include fire alarms fire extinguishers and fire hoses Further the high buildings are designed in accordance with the Ontario Building Code that provides for fire separation of floors and individual apartments All these factors are incorporated during the construction of these buildings Residential fires con to be the number one loca tion for fire fatalities as opposed to high and apartment buildings I encourage all individuals ing in high nse buildings to become familiar with the emergency procedures in the event of a fire This information can be obtained from both the owner of the building or by con tacting the Hills Fire Department Sincerely David Georgetown Thanks from Globe To the Editor Georgetown Globe Productions recently completed a very suc cessful run of the musical com edy Guys and Dolls A great deal of that success was due to the excellent press appreciative of the efforts of the Herald and Halton Rapid in printing the pro grams for Guys and Dolls Finally thank you for the use of the Herald truck during the show Such efforts are sure to Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department for their fast and efficient service on Boxing Day when we had a par ticularly unpleasant chimney fire Since we live in the country we still find it hard to believe how they arrived so quickly Georgetown is very fortunate to have such a remarkable ser vice and once again our sincerest thanks to all members Yours truly Joan and Ken Meers 3 Georgetown Reasons most commonly g ven include I just do not have the pa This from executives and managers who deal with people and their problems each and every day Or from the individual who has a cat dog and goldfish tank and a number of other hob bies and interests Another is we both have careers to get ahead and we jut would not let anyone else raise our children I call this the yuppy syndrome I want it all at the expense of farm ly and health My all time favorite its just too expensive Statistics on this subject are con tinuously publicized by the media Just the other day I heard on the radio that it costs to raise a child to 16 years of age to me this is not reality but the product of a want all society We can all take a lesson from those lower income families whom through circumstances have to make the dollar go a Jong way Why not use cloth diapers make your own baby food or breast feed Clothing cribs change tables and other useful things can be handed down from other family members at garage sales auctions dis count stores manufactures outlets etc Why not move close to the grandparents or ask them to move in as many ethnic families do in order to help raise the children It is not a mandatory condition for having children that they be signed up in baseball hockey soccer music lessons ballet private school etc just because the neighbors child is or your child wants to be There are many options available to couples wanting to start a family Options which have positive tax financial en vlronmental health and moral benefits which could be attained if we would just stop letting peer and social pressure mold us into something we re not By putting a little less em phasis on material things and learning to rely on the family structures will help to keep these costs in line so that we may all ex the joys that children bring Acton Tar Ik doubla ad A I brandi Nag a WW sale99 SAVE 50 OFF ALL OTHER SUITS Ova from A brondl ay P Aihb and lnox mora B g la aci on io Rag SALES SAVE
